Disrespecting the dead

More than 30 gravestones in a churchyard have been smashed and pushed over by vandals.

Some of the damaged stones at St Trillo's Church in Rhos-on-Sea, Conwy date back to World War I.

North Wales Police described the attack as "mindless hooliganism" and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Conwy councillor Phil Edwards said there had been previous problems with children drinking alcohol in the churchyard but this had been stopped.

The churchyard is the final resting place of Harold Lowe, the officer on the Titanic who saved four passengers from the doomed liner in his lifeboat in 1912.

His grave was not vandalised but the tombstone of Adela Wylie, who died in 1914, has been pushed forward and its cross broken.

The cross on Ralph Ogden's tombstone, who died in 1918, has also been smashed.

Coun Edwards said the vandalism was "enough to turn your stomach".

"It is terrible to see these smart imposing grave stones pushed over," he said.

"If it was children that did this, they must have been older children, and there must have been more than one, because these stones were big and heavy.

This is just sickening. Not only is it disrespectful and upsetting, it's also very expensive to mend. Bloody thugs should be made to pay for the damage and carry out the work and the upkeep of the gravestones for a year!

Chez, I completely agree with you babe. We have a cemetary right around the road from us and these little toadies who drink & party there think it's funny to vandalise the tombstones, etc.

They have caught the party here who did it recently and it was taken extremely serious...they vandalized several headstones of Civil War soldiers buried here.

We have a peep here in town who dedicates herself to keeping that part of the cemetary clean and proper:).

yes it does turn your stomach:mad:my nana's grave has to make do without a vase now as my mam says she dont mind paying for a new one every now and then,, but not for some low life to keep nicking them:-5

It's just disgusting in my book. Some teen brats thinking "oh look, let's push over a gravestone" and not really thinking about it.

Granted, I've partied in cemetaries when I was young, but was always mindful of the headstones. We never went near them...in fact, we walked around and read them. Interesting things you can find out reading them.

If they actually walked around the cemetary they could learn a few things about the peeps they vandalized. I actually love walking in cemetaries...the things you can read about & so headstones have quotes on them, which I think are really cool.

Cemeteries are places where we honor the lives of the people who we have known and those who have gone before us. The way we treat cemeteries is a reflection on our respect for life. I really believe you can judge how a community values the living by how it takes care of its cemetery.

Hey, it's not bad but we do have the little brats that will occaisionaly (?) disrepect the headstones and the police take it very seriously.

It's when the community doesn't see it as important that the police will quit taking it seriously. The police are demonstrating the community's respect for life. IMO

up in town every year at the end of school there are some major vandalism in the cemetery .broken stones or tire ruts across several graves, it's just plain sicking to say the last.

My family has our private cemetery here on the ranch we have no problems from humans, but scene it is fenced off the grass grows real pretty and green, there are always cow tracks inside and the fence to mend every summer. but since we are all ranch folks born and bred ,we don't get to excited about our live stock mowing the grass in our cemetery. :wah:

my great grandfather buried an old prospector that had been pecking around these hills for several years he was found dead in his camp one morning that was in 1914 . my great grandpa was a signal man on the railroad , one day in 1915 he was going down the tracks on what was called a hand car , one of those that they had to pump to make go, any ways some one got their signals mixed up and grandpa met a train coming up the tracks on a blind curve and so he was the second person to be buried in our cemetery. the last family member to be buried there at this point is my brother in 2007 . there are all together 25 people in the cemetery 6 that are not family but very old and dear friends of our family.

Cemetaries exist really for the family and friends of the deceased. A finally resting place for the person that they knew. A place for the living to go and pay respects. A place for the living to go to pray or meditate or just remember that person. The family and friends of the deceased are the true guardians of the cemetary. That being said, all visitors to a cemetary should show respect and care when they enter the place. None of us will live forever and maybe we will be lucky enough to have friends and family who care enough to have a final resting place for our bodies. And maybe they will come to pay their respects to us through the years.

Vandalism anywhere is thoughtless and just wrong.

I remember seeing the old hand cars in movies, great way to get around!

That is so true AFTR.

We have a committee here & each family on the committee has a week designated to them & it is their turn to keep the cemetary tidy etc.

The would be vandals know we are there but don't know when;)

My MIL is getting to old to go now so we all take it in turns for her.

The gates to the cemetary have to be locked at 6pm & opened at 6am every day.

So far it is working.

IMO It's when you live in a pathetic police state where the community are frightened to approach the yobs. One, you may get your head kicked in. Two, the yobs can tell the police you assaulted them and the police will not only believe them, they will arrest and charge you.

You call the "yobs", I call them creeps. Either way it does seem the creepy yobs have the upper hand in many communities. Thankfully, there are still some communities where the police know there are certain things that are important to protect.
