Can you envision a world where we would not train soldiers to kill other people?

I wonder what would happen if there where no soldiers, or there are soldiers, but just to do social work. What would happen? or what would not happen?

You may have the 'suits' pressing buttons, if there was a country to country argument !

Sad thing is I dont think it'll happen this side of never. We've had God knows how many thousands of years to "civilise" ourselves, to treat each other as as we would wish to be treated. We just seem to be incapable of living as a community without some degree of violence. War is just an extension of that process. West Ham v Spurs, whatever, just on a bigger scale.

We all, as individuals, dream of a time where war would be unthinkable but then in turn commit violence of some sort. Whether it be down the pub, on the football terraces, with the neighbours. We are simply incapable, and have been since man first trundled out the caves, of living in peace.

There is a statistic that shows something like there being only one year free of war since God knows when. Someone will know or find it. Its an appalling indictment of humanity but there we have it. Shameful but there we are.

Having said that, since we have an Armed Force I would prefer it to be as proficient and as expertly trained as it could possibly be. Then it is up to us to elect the right people to never have to use them.

It leaves a nasty taste in the mouth to admit to the fact we shall always need an army. I wish I was wrong but I have very little faith in human Kind.

I'd love someone to change my mind. I'm not normally given to pessimism

That would be fantastic Chez.

I can't see it happening but it would be great.

I wouldn't have to worry about our grandson joining the Army as he wants to do.

He is only 16 & is talking about what he will do in the army.

I worry for him & about him..................................

I guess I would worry anyway,he is my grandson.

I don't know how I would deal with it if/when he got sent away from Australia.

I don't know how any parent, loved one deals with that sort of thing.

He has wanted to be in the army, since he was 10.

Social work sounds great to me,be good just to be able to use the army at times of ,flood, fire etc.
It's nice to be important, but more important to be nice.

All the people living just as one.

I truly believe we would if it weren't for our 'apparently' elected world leaders.

I can tell you this much, I didn't vote for any one of them to be my leader.
