Well I'm Back

Post by QUINNSCOMMENTARY »

Not that it will shake the earth or anything, but after three weeks I am back in the US. If nothing else, I need a good old fashioned American or at least NJ breakfast. Try as I do I cannot get used to the European version of this first meal of the day.

I mean, ham and cheese or in the case of Italy salami and cheese a hard boiled egg and assorted rolls and bread just ain't' breakfast. And the bacon, well my idea of bacon is 80% meat and 20% fat, but it seems to be reversed, at least on Malta and in Italy, yikes and Europeans are healthier than us overweight Americans, how do they do it, must be that national health insurance that keeps them going. :yh_rotfl

Give me some fried eggs, perhaps sausage and biscuits and home fries or grits anytime, if I am going over the top with cholesterol, I want it to taste good in the process. My first step the morning after I arrived home was to go get a potato and egg sandwich on a hard roll with Taylor Ham (if you know what that is, then I know where you live too). :-3

The world is a big place, but there is no place like home. Plus there is an added bonus, in the US every toilet has a seat...not so in Italy. When I inquired why no seats, I was told because they broke too often so they are never replaced. What the heck do they do on those seats anyway?

And here is a pitch for saving the planet, as we traveled over the beautiful hills and valleys of Sicily admiring the mountains, valleys and farmland, we were also greeted by churning 300 foot wind turbines dotting the countryside. Now I ask you what ruins the view more a nice old nuclear power plant or a wind-farm intermingled with 12th century farm houses, ah progress. :(

Aw, did little didums miss his lickle housey?

Soft, that's what you are my boy, that baby breakfast is rubbish.

Biscuits? Grits? What the hell are you on about?

That's pet food for languid rabbits.

Come over to Ireland boy, we'll sort you out.

What you want is proper Irish Rashers, none of this crispy US pseudo-bacon nonsense. That crap you eat is like the stuff you find down the back of the cooker when your cleaning the kitchen.

100 Percent Irish pork sausages, made from pigs shot earlier in the morning (preferably by yourself, and banned from world markets by noon).

Some black pudding (made from congealed pigs blood and grains).

Some white pudding, (made from pig guts and grains).

Some potato scones

Baked beans

Fried Mushrooms

Farmhouse Bread

Several pints of guinness

And brown sauce.

That's a man's breakfsat, girlie boy. :wah:

Gosh, I could never eat a big breakfast like that! I barely eat a little rice cake or waffle before I tote out to school.

Whoa, what the hell is that? Is that breakfast?

It looks nice, but I don't know about having it in the morning.

What about the Bavarian breakfast, Pretzels, Wiesswurst, sweet mustard, and a weissbeer. It takes a bit of work to get through that I have to say.

No problem with the Irish breakfast, in fact there are a few restaurants over hear who claim to serve an Irish breakfast although not the same I admit. White pudding I love, but black I have yet to try, it's that blood thing. I like the links, baked beans, ah Guinness for breakfast not so much, but a little fish is OK.

You forgot the grilled tomato I seem to recall that on the table in Ireland.

Hey, we can match you fat for fat and cholesterol for cholesterol any day and we have lox and bagels too, with cream cheese to boot.

But it has to be a grilled hard roll done on the flat grill so it sops up all the previous goodies fried before it...but where can you get a good hard roll these days?

Hey, it's Europe, we saw lots of churches, old buildings, but with a new twist this time, Greek temples in Sicily.

And we drank lots of wine, ate dozens of canoli and a few gallons of gellato which all added up to more than a few pounds.

Taylor ham? Is that the pork roll your talking about? Fam loves it, not me as I will eat scrapple anyday of the week for brekkie, plus two eggs over easy and toast. Throw in some hashbrowns and I'll be fine.:-4
