Hubby on national UK TV this coming Sunday!! 22 March

Post by G#Gill »

We went to the Vale of Belvoir yesterday. BBC 1 TV were filming for a programme called 'Countryfile', which goes out nationally on Sundays. My hubby Chris was being interviewed by John Craven (presenter) about the Grantham Canal. This will be going out next Sunday 22nd March in the programme 'Countryfile' which starts at 11 am and runs for 1 hour. Chris's spot will be after the Weather Forecast for the week at about 11.45 am. He is the Vice President of the Grantham Canal Society.

I took a few photos of John Craven preparing to do the interview at Musson Gorse on the Grantham Canal. John Craven is the one with very white hair, Chris has his back to the camera, the producer is standing to the left of the picture. Apparently they had radio mikes, so Chris said he didn't dare make any untoward noises - the mikes are very sensitive !! :yh_rotfl :yh_rotfl :lips:

The face is unbovvered, but the knees are a bit of a concern! :wah:

Vale of Belvoir (pronounced "Beaver" for our foreign friends, especially those with minds that spend a lot of time below belt level:sneaky:) is near where I grew up - Rutland. Very beautiful.

Oh, Spring is coming and I feel this terrible urge to get out there again. Just have to sort out some dosh...

Clodders you will really have to come up and see the Vale and the Castle - they are gorgeous at this time of year. Oh, and not forgetting the 'Dirty Duck' at Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir - a very popular and agreeable venue :wah: :wah:

Another pic of the filming yesterday :-

This was taken near Denton slipway.

Steam powered boat? Wow! Don't see many of those around. Very cool.

Haven't been to Belvoir Castle since I were a nipper, but I remember it well. Jam packed and stuffed full of the loot of Empire, as I recall.

You may be able to get it on the internet, but I'm not sure about that. If you search www.bbc.uk/countryfile you may be lucky. I know you can see a programme if you have missed it when it actually goes out, in the UK. Not sure if this facility is possible to see in America, perhaps somebody can advise on that. It looks as if America is about 5 hours behind UK, so it would go out somewhere around 6 am (USA) on Sunday ! ;) :wah:

This picture is of some of the volunteers (having a short break between 'shots') who were able to get along for the filming, so they could get film of people actually busy working along the canal towpath. Chris is the one with the hard hat and hi-viz jacket on the right. :)

Country File is a fab programme and i always watch if I'm up. (I work late sat nights). I will set my alarm. I was live in GMTV interviewed by Ben Shepherdand Kirsty Gallagher. That was reallt scarey as lots of studio camera's etc but i did like the Green room business. They are very generous with breakfast and you get your hair and make up done.

I shall look out for him. Best of luck. :-6:-6

Well I did say I would 'fill you in' about various hiccups before, during, and after the filming :-

The owner of 'Otter' duly arrived very early with his lovely steam launch, slipped it into the canal at Denton, tied it to a mooring post then proceeded to organise the engine etc. Everything was done ready for starting the engine, and the BBC film crew, and John Craven were waiting in great anticipation. However, the engine was struck up, started, was running nicely, then BANG! Apparently a nut at the top of the cylinder sheered off ! The owner, who had by now got the boiler nicely steaming, struggled to sort out his engine. After several minutes, a lot of grunts and groans and using different tools etc. He announced that unfortunately it was an 'in the workshop' job ! Chris noticed that there was a pair of short oars inside the boat, and there were a couple of rollocks on the gunwales - he asked if it could be rowed, then once speed had been attained, they could ship the oars and with the steam gushing from the boiler, it would look like the boat was under way ! Also, somebody could pull the boat along by using the forward line ! Great ideas, they were immediately adopted. Trouble was there was no engine sound (a gentle knocking really), so whilst the camera was pointing at John Craven, Chris and the boat owner were gently tapping with their knuckles on the side of the boat !

So if you manage to see this programme (11am - 12 noon Sunday 22 March BBC 1 - Countryfile), please don't laugh too loud - we may permit a knowing smile though ! It just shows that problems can be got round with a little cunning ! One thing, John Craven thought it was a hoot, and found difficulty keeping a straight face, particularly when the knuckles were knocking for the engine sound !

This pic is the steam launch being pulled through the bridge by the producer (just out of picture to the left !) - they do physical work too sometimes you know! :wah:

Well the programme went out as scheduled - 1.00am till 12 noon, and it was very well presented ! Chris was a star :guitarist, particularly when he was knocking his knuckles on the side of the boat to sound like the engine running :yh_rotfl. The castle, of course, looked beautiful - just like a fairy castle ! I do wave to the Duke of Rutland quite often from my window (I can see Belvoir Castle from my house !), but he never waves back - a bit rude don't you think ? Well maybe it could be because he is about 9 miles away (as the crow flies) and may not notice me frantically waving ! ................................... :yh_rotfl :yh_rotfl :yh_rotfl
