OTTAWA - The Canadian government has demanded an apology from Fox News for "despicable" and "disgusting" comments made on one of its late-night programs.

The government was incensed by a recent talk-show segment on the American conservative cable network that poked fun at Canada and the Canadian military.

A group of pundits took turns trashing Canada and its reliability as an ally in fighting terrorism last week as four more Canadian soldiers were killed in separate attacks in Afghanistan.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay requested an apology just before leaving for Canadian Forces Base Trenton, where he was to attend a repatriation ceremony with the families of the latest soldiers killed.

"It's crass, it's insensitive, it's in fact disgusting, given the timing," MacKay said.

"There should be an apology - to the families in particular, and to the Canadian Forces and to Canada generally - given the sacrifice and the commitment that we've demonstrated in Afghanistan."

Canadian soldiers have been fighting in Afghanistan since 2001 and have spent the last four years in the country's most violent region.

Canada has lost 116 soldiers in Afghanistan.

A spokesman stressed that the Canadian government specifically wants an apology from the panelists who made the wisecracks - and not just from the Fox network at large.

"These are despicable, hurtful and ignorant comments," said Dan Dugas, a spokesman for MacKay.

"I think that so-called comedian should stare in the camera at his first opportunity and apologize to all of the families of people he's hurt with these despicable comments.

"And he's got to say, 'I was misinformed. I was ignorant of the truth and the contribution of the Canadian Forces to the war on terror, and I want to take it back. I know as a comedian that I can fail sometimes; I failed miserably at this so-called comedy.'

"And his panelists should say the same."

Canada says it will withdraw most of its 2,500 troops from Kandahar when its current combat mission expires in 2011.

News of that impending withdrawal, and the army chief's comments that the military would need a year's hiatus to regroup and refurbish, served as a launching pad for members of the Fox panel to mock Canada.

The five-minute Fox News segment aired last week on the late-night program "Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld" and it was later posted on YouTube.

The segment features American panelists suggesting Canadian soldiers need time off for "manicures and pedicures."

The item aired after Lt.-Gen. Andrew Leslie, the Canadian Forces Chief of Land Staff, said the military would need a one-year break from operations after the difficult mission in Afghanistan winds down.

"The Canadian military wants to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white capri pants," Gutfeld said with a sneer, adding: "Isn't this the perfect time to invade this ridiculous country? They have no army."

Another panelist, Doug Benson, said he didn't even know Canadian troops were in Afghanistan.

"I didn't even know they were in the war. I thought that's where you go if you don't want to fight - you go chill in Canada," he said.

I detest Fox News and their horrible narrow minded biased reporters. And they call themselves fair?:-5:-5 If I'm going to watch late night news shows I usually watch MSNBC with Keith Olberman & Rachel Maddow both of whom I like.

:-5:-5Oh they've had peeps on with Bill O'Reilly, etc. and they can't get a word in because he has the horrible habit of twisting things peeps say to him and throws in back in their faces where they then have to regroup themselves and get the point across. It's nausating to watch, so I don't.

it is what it is, the incident this weekend was prolly more crass given the fact we just brought home 3 dead soldiers from the middle east. I say if you are going to be a jokster or whatever you call gutfeld then do your research and have a modecom of respect.

That was pretty awful.

IMO, the probs with Fox News is they don't do research. they have their blabbermeisters on 24/7 lying to anyone willing to listen. I can't even watch it.

That was pretty awful. Yes the timing was crass. I can understand how you feel as we have just had muslim fanatics ranting in the streets when ours were brought home. I wonder if the same numpty will critise Britain in the same way?

yeah I have heard various reports today stating this guy is on a 2 bit late nite blab show and not to give a rip what he said. But it's all over the news and the net now, and that is a shame.

Pity it's people like this that will get comments like this going

Fox News. Its what makes us cringe most isnt it ? I suppose we shouldnt be at all suprised. You Tube is full of Fox News clips where they shoot off at the mouth before their brains (if they have any) click into gear.

It is a shame! The other thing I detest about FoxNews is the way these dopes

"think all American's agree with them". Ah, not in the least here on my end. I have made many friends in Canada and talk to Odie by phone all the time by phone. It's even more embarrassing since Obama just came for a visit and this crap happens!:mad:

Fox & Rush are out with their claws against the libs/Obama crowd. Can't get past the fact that we the peeps elected them, etc. Am rather glad that my party is finally in control for a change especially for women's rights, etc. and hopefully to get this awful war which I never supported ended.

Why people fall for it I don't know. Johnathon Ross is in another league i feel. He uses crude inuendo to boost his ratings The man is a knob.

Actually, it was four, for a sad total of five within one week.

The aircraft returning our fallen soldiers fly directly over my house, enroute to CFB Trenton, about 15 km to the west.

Fox, Gutfeld, and the rest of those p!ss ignorant bastards can burn in hell.

This is going to inflame a lot of anti-American sentiment in Canada, just as things were getting better after the end of the Bush era.

I like Chris Mathews and Olberman but cmon, theyre pretty biased too.
