Patriotic postie Deva Kumarasiri forced to quit | News | News Of The World

This Postie sings the praises of Great Britain to the tune that he wouldn't serve anyone who would not speak English. He says that immigrants must learn the language of the country they wish to live in. What i found ironic when this story first broke, is that as we all know, if this was an English man, he'd be before the courts right now for racism.

I applaud him his stance. I agree with him in principle but I understand that immigration is used to keep wages down. Speaking the language is not a requirement as interpreters are put in charge of them.

Working on a site near Asilah, Morocco back in 1990, a Moroccan was employed. He was sacked by the end of the day. He was from a different part of Morocco and his dialect made it impossible for the existing Moroccan workers to understand him or make themselves understood to him. It was all Arabic to me. Don't asilama the door.

I actually agree with him. It's just unrealistic to expect to re-locate to a foriegn country to spend the rest of your life there and not even try to learn the language. Thay know one word very well though.....BENIFIT :wah:

I agree with his remarks that if you move to a country you should make the effort to speak the language. His argument was that some immigrants are too lazy to learn and just want an easy life, make money and then go home. He has no respect or time for people like that.

Understandable in some situations but surely a basic understanding of the language is essential?

On the other hand......................how many of us go on holiday to foreign countries and just expect them to speak English? We have been holidaying in Turkey for years now and are learning the language as we are hoping to retire to Turkey in a few years. The Turks ADORE the fact that we try (badly) to speak their language and are always happy to sit with us and give us lessons or correct our pronunciation.

Learn a little of the language wherever you go. It's well worth it.

(except Welsh - I just can't get my head around it!)

:) We have close friends and neighbours who's shop i look after at weekends. Our friends are turkish as are most of the staff. They always come from extended family on a work visa and all are always as keen to learn English asap. We start by getting them childrens books but the first words i teach them is 'Lovelly Jubbly' and tell them it means thankyou. Over the years, i have learnt a fair bit of Turkish and often they can be in a conversation between each other and I understand what they are talking about but i couldn't repeat it. They agree that to live and work in another country and not learn a little of the language is just dis-respectfull. Infact, i've just returned from a near-by Turkish grocery store where you can get anything. I love their food and my friend has taught me some recipee's

Make up your mind oscar. the ones forcing him to be transferred for his own safety are the same ones that you defend in other posts. You either want sharia law in england or you don't. You either think people should be able to insist we change to suit their way of life rather than they adapt to ours or you don't.

No id on't want Sharia law in England. The muslims i defend in other threads are being defended on a legal basis. The legal right to hold a protest under our freedom of speech laws. I do that because we are a nation of hypocrites who want freedom of speech until some nasty muslim who is British uses the same law but says something we don't like.

I agree with the postie in a different way. Him being hounded out of his business by radical muslims is no differnet to Pakistani shop keepers who are hounded out of their business's through British rascism on sink estates. The muslims who have hounded him out of his shop should be treated no differently than any other person using threats and intimidation to get what they want.

I totally agree with him based on the fact that i have witnessed first hand the problems when any foriegn national coming to this country refuses to speak English. It's just not practical. I certainly would not consider re-locating to another country without at least trying to learn their language just to get by if anything. To refuse to learn English when wanting to live the rest of their days here is just arrogance however.

You are defending hypocrites. Those muslim protesters claim freedom of speech for themselves and damn those who object but then use terror to shut up someone they don't agree with or have the unmitigated temerity to make fun og their religion. This postie has been moved for his own safety! You object to yobos creating havoc and fear but what is the difference between them and muslims that terrorise people in to keeping quiet about things they don't people should say?

If they cared about free speech they would protect this man. Try exercising your right to call islam a load of rubbish and see how you get on-they claim you offend their religion and shouldn't say such things, annoy them enough and maybe they'll declare a fatwa on you. What price your freedom then?

Being tolerant in a liberal secular society doesn't mean you have to put up with those that would take advantage of that tolerance to actively try and change the very nature of the society that has accepted them and pour contempt on our culture while objecting if we should happen to be derogatory about theirs.

That's not being racist or anti muslim I would say the same about the Catholics or protestant Christian fundamentalist if they tried the same kind of thing.

Our freedom of speech is hard won, if they want to protest then they have to accept that people have the right to criticise them.
