Fresh Strawberries

Post by Lon »

All of the local super markets are featuring fresh strawberries. They are huge and sure look nice, however they are bitter and very acidic despite their advertising that says they are sooo sweet.

I buy strawberries from some of the roadside Hmong (South East Asian People) near where I live and they are what strawberries are supposed to taste like.

I had some for lunch today. But they weren't as sweet as usual. But my tummy didn't notice one bit, it was happy.

Buy small, red ones. Smell them first - if they don't smell *wonderful*, then they aren't. You can keep them on to ripen, but success is by no means assured - the contrary, IMO.

Lon, they are bitter and very acidic because they are picked green and not vine ripened. Now the ones you buy along the roadside are picked when ripe........

Some fruits will sweeten more when picked green but not strawberries...

You could move out to the central coast of CA where they grow the best in the world...

Also did you know that strawberries are in the 'ROSE' (Rosaceae) family?

i was just about to post that the reason they are bitter is because they are picked green but i see you already have.

we have our own strawberry patch in the garden, they are much, much better if you can get them from folks who let them vine ripen. :)

Isn't that the best? I always put sugar on them, then it dissolves into to berries and leaves a nice sauce.:guitarist:guitarist

For dessert last night I had delish strawberries with "Marzetti Cream Cheese Fruit-Dip." That stuff is soooooo good. You can find this product in the fresh fruit section:guitarist

Or, how about having frozen strawberries, blackberries and raspberries with Ina Garden's recipe. She's from the Food Network channel.

Ingredients

1 1/4 pounds good white chocolate, coarsely chopped

2 1/2 cups heavy cream

2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract

2 1/4 pounds frozen mixed berries or frozen raspberries

Directions

Combine the chocolate, heavy cream, and the vanilla in a heat-proof bowl and set it over a pan of simmering water until the chocolate melts.

About 5 minutes before serving, remove the berries from the freezer and place them on individual serving plates. Ladle the warm chocolate sauce over the berries and serve.

Yield: 8 to 10 servings

Note: You can either buy frozen berries, or freeze your own by placing the berries on a flat tray in layer. When the berries are fully frozen, keep them a plastic bag in the freezer. Larger berries, such as strawberries, do not freeze well.

Yup. The fields are there. They hold it in Feb because thats when theyre picked. Jan usually brings cold weather. They set off sprinklers in the field and the ice coating that develops protects the berry and makes it sweeter. The temperature variance is really narrow between a good crop and spoil. Those farmers stay up all night walking the fields during those cold nights.

Thats what we do. Just a sprinkling of sugar and it turns succulent, draws out the moisture.
