I watched this on the News this evening and was speechless.....how on earth is this right....when the cover was thrown over the old ladys head it brought tears to my eyes....is this what I have to look forward to in later years if I get sick.

That is a sad story, it always makes me afraid that one day they will make my husband go to a home, whether I want him to or not.

If they cannot prove that the mother would *not* have been adequately cared for by the daughter I think they are in big trouble.
It would also be interesting to see what the position would be if the daughter now refused to pay the £2,000 / month fees on the grounds that the council had taken insisted on taking on the burden of care.

Police used a battering ram to gain entry to the house and from what i guess, a pack of reporters outside. The blanket would have been used to protect the old ladies identity and for that i would agree.

I agree about the fees and can you see her paying them cause I cant and who can blame her.

I totally agree - the council had no right to force the mother into care against the wishes of the family unless they could prove beyond reasonable doubt that the daughter would be unable to provide the care required.

It looked like that the daughter had done everything in her power to make her mother comfortable.I am so pleased this has been made public and hopefully this case will be looked into.....well im sure it will be now.

My Godmother spend twenty+ years looking after her mother who suffered from Altzimers - I have nothing but respect for her dedication and the love she showed. She had no money for fancy appliances, just love and determination to make her mother's life as comfortable as possible.

So the elderly mother was in the nursing home and the daughter removed her from the home? Why did the daughter feel that she needed to have her mother placed in the home in the beginning? The use of force seems like a bit much, but... I suppose it's a bit different considering the daughter voluntarily entered her mother into the home to begin with. If the daughter can't care for her constantly, it seems like she could hire a care-taker part time and still allow her mother to live in her home.
It's sad, but that's just a fact of life it seems... there are so few people out there who care about the ill or elderly. From the description, the nursing home seemed more like a prison, really... what sort of quality of life is that?

I did not like the way that woman whipped the blanket up over the old lady's face. That was undignified and disrespectful and makes me wonder if the home is providing proper care. They didn't know how to fold up the wheelchair to put it in the boot either.
I get the impression that her daughter just took her out of the care home with the understanding that she would be returned at 6pm. It's clear then that the old lady was officially under the care of the care home which means the home had a responsibility to take her back there. There is a procedure to follow to get authority to remove a person from a care home and I can't see that this was followed.
As much as I am on the side of the daughter taking care of her mother, she has probably made her case harder to pursue by not following procedure.

Some good points there but no matter what way you look at it this lady wasn't treated the way she should have been and indeed deserved and that I think we all agree on.

The mother was in the home whilst the daughter had extensive alterations made to her house to allow her to look after her mother properly - prior to those changes the daughter felt that she would not be able to provide the right level of care, after the changes she believed she could.

Yes protect her identity, but wouldnt it have been better if the police had removed the reporters so that she could be brought out without having a blanket flung over her? whats more important? that the public get to see her brought out of the house with a blanket over her head? or her being shown some respect in a very difficult and upsetting situation?

you know,,, when my dad started having the strokes,, and then he got pretty bad and spent quite a while in hospital,, social services were determined to become involved,,(through an occupational therapists reccommendation) they spoke to my dad,, and to nurses etc, about how my mam couldnt cope and needed help etc,, this went on for a while and yet no one at all met my mother,, spoke to her,, came to the house,, or indeed spoke to any of the family to find out wether she and the family would be capable of caring for him. No wonder my mam became so distustful of them ,,, when the O.T. finally came to my mams house she asked my mother who was sorting out the stairlift for them and she would try to help push it along,,, you know what she did? she phoned them and told them they shouldnt put one in as he wouldnt be able to work it!!!! Of course he wouldnt,, thats why someone always had to be there to help him.. we already knew he needed 24 hour care. Still social services had not even met my mother how did they know how capable or incapable she was? oh fgs im rambling now and i could go on and on,, they just made me so mad, and have also been of no help whatsoever!:-5:-5:-5

It seems very strange, but there must be something more to it.
When we hear of children being horrible abused at home we are all very fast to criticize the social system for not acting fast or hard enough and failing to protect the child, then when they do act we say what horrible people they are to act so cruelly.
It is hard to believe that there was not something that was causing to concern to have them act as they did.
I agree that just covering someone’s face with a blanket shows little compassion or respect for the individual, even if it is done so with the intention of protecting privacy.
It is too difficult to get the full understanding from a short media story and clip.
On the surface it is all very strange.

yes i think most people here undestand that maybe there was a case to take her back to the home,,, like you say we dont really know the full story maybe,, i think it was just the basic lack of care about a persons dignity in the way it was done that has shocked.

I don't know - however, they do this with animals. It would be nice to know the identity of the person concerned, so that she could be asked.

On the surface it is all very strange. It shows IMO they didnt give a damn about the poor ladys feelings being treated this way.....this case is being investigated for the way it was handled and right to.Mind you makes you think how much more of this treatment goes on without us knowing. If the neighbour wouldn't have taken the Video we wouldnt have been any the wiser. We see and hear some terrible stories what goes on with the elderly behind closed doors and its about time this sort of treatment to elderly sick people stopped as its not only cruel its bloody wrong.
