is it time to free biggs ? the AA grumpy column

Post by pantoandy »

hello here i am again your ever faithfull grumpy rooting round in the knicker drawer of life for yet another tasty thread.

this time from the pen of AA grumpy instead of a off the peg media search so i hope it entertains you as most of the time i dont get time to write columns like this.

this week the media is full of stories of ronnie biggs parole hearing .

now in his late 70,s he cannot walk far unaided cannot read or write and has to be fed through a tube in his stomach.

opinion is divided as to wether biggs should be set free on compasionate grounds

due to his age and fraill condition.

some 46 years have passed since biggs and the rest of the gang robbed the mail at bridego bridge.

where the rest of the gang recieved sentences of 30 years ronnie biggs and buster edwards escaped justice abroad edwards came back did his time and had a flower stall on waterloo station biggs remained on the run in brazil laughing at british justice untill his failing health prompted him to contact the sun newspaper who brought him back to britain 8 years ago and is now locked up in norwich jail having been moved from high security belmarsh jail.

the sentences of 30 years where passed at aylesbury crown court as it was a most audacious robbery at the time.

biggs has served the least sentence for his part in the crime a mere 8 years of a life sentence but do we exact revenge for driver jhon mills death by keeping biggs locked up untill he dies or do we use compassion and set biggs free to die in the outside world.

it is not a case of wether biggs is a danger to the public or his failing health the question is has ronald arthur biggs served enough time to be freed ?

What good is being done for the public at large by keeping him locked up?

When people routinely serve less than eight years for pre-meditated murder nowadays it appears to be petty vengeance to keep him inside now.

I think he should be freed. Its funny. Had he been tried for anything other than stealing money, albeit a very large amount, he wouldnt have recieved such a sentance. There is no reason to keep him locked up whatsoever

Let's not forget a man did die as the result of the Great Train Robbery.... may be not intentionally but he died all the same.

Biggs laughed in the face of the British flaunting himself in Rio with other crooks exempt from deportation for years.

He should serve the full time..... I have no sympathy for him just because he's old.

Who is forgetting it? As I said previously, he's already served more time than many who's actions resulted in a death and Jack Mills's death occurred seven years later - it therefore does not qualify as murder.

Jack Slipper persued him for years, keeping him in now is nothing more than vengeance for Slipper of the Yard's failure.

There are difficulties here.

a) He escaped, and continued to "**** a snook" at Authority.

b) If he's "let out early" because of his age, then what of other old criminals, past or just starting?

c) If "nowadays he wouldn't have got 30 years", then "Nowadays he'd have to make reparation".

a) Oh dear. "Knob a snook", perhaps? Not *at all* the same meaning. Blasted stupid word censoring.

I agree with you Bill. He escaped and laughed at Scotland Yard for years. I remember constantly seeing his smug grin on tv from Rio. Did he not only come back here because he was broke and ill?

It is not "because of his age" it is because of his condition - he is blind and unable to walk after a series of strokes, is fed through tube into his stomach and needs 24hour care. Let the guy die in peace.

I think he should be freed and sent back to Brazil seeing as he loved it so much out there.
