Judge attacks low-cost alcohol.

Post by Bill Sikes »

From "The Daily Telegraph":

##

Judge attacks low-cost alcohol - Telegraph

"Judge Philip Statman QC interrupted the man's defence barrister in astonishment after being told benefits covered the daily consumption of two dozen cans of the high-strength Belgian lager and two bottles of Strongbow cider."

"Mr Statman, speaking at Maidstone Crown Court, interjected when defence barrister Louise Oakley told him of Welfare's alcohol consumption despite only receiving £60.40 a week in Jobseeker's Allowance.

The judge said: "Where does he get the money for 24 cans of Stella a day?"

She explained that Welfare lived with his parents, meaning the benefit payments amounted to pocket money, adding that the price of Stella had plunged in recent years."

##

So, with £64.4 per week, £9.2 per day, one can buy 24 tins of Stella Artosis, and two bottles of Strongbow?

Low cost alcohol? ahh the 'Cask' What would we do without it? 5 litres of wine all for ten dollars. $8 dollars when on special. It's a favourite for welfare recipients.

That appears to be £4.9, approximately. We can't get such good deals here, AFAIK.

You wouldn't want to it's disgusting stuff. It's the wine you provide at parties as a cheap alternative to real wine. young women mix it with lemonade or soda water as a cheap version of a mixer drink. And some of our indiginous friends buy it by the bucket loads. It should be banned in my opinion.I remember how much Stella cost in the UK and it's not cheap stuff.:-2

We have kids OD-ing on full bottles of scotch and whiskey and rum etc. because there was a kneejerk reaction when it was said the cheap mixer drinks were making alcoholics of our children . So the government put the cost of a four pack of say coke and rum to $24 . You can buy a straight bottle of rum for that amount so instead the kids are mixing these drinks themselves and not using proper shots in doing so. So instead of having four shots of rum they are having 24 shots.

stupid stupid idea.

Snowfire Aldi stores are a bit like that, they have imported versions of what we normally drink and it's half the cost.

When £20 buys you 60 bottles of strong lager, how can we take a crackdown on drinking seriously? | Mail Online

This article is a year old but you can still pretty much get these sort of prices for lager.

God's teeth. I've just looked it up at eTcso.

Stella Artois 5% Can 24x330ml £16.18 (£2.04/litre)

*however*:

Any 2 for £18.00 - valid from 05/05/2009 until 10/05/2009

But they're only small tins. Still, that's 8 litres, I think. This sherry's making my eyes swivel, so I can't be sure.

So, it's a toss-up between Strongbow & Stella.

You could brew your own. A dustbinful for about 2 quid but I couldnt vouch for the quality and I doubt you would still have your sight by the time you got to the bottom. A lemonade top might take the edge off a bit

Stella is sold as such a sophisticated lager. "reasuringly expensive" I think the ads used to say.

They refuse to sell the stuff to tourist in Belgium thank goodness. Made us try the good Belgian beer. I have fond memories of that weekend

I have done so in the past, & it's more than a couple of quid for "a dustbinful", unless I suppose one is uncaring. I suppose that if I could get sugar dirt cheap a brew would be possible, however unpalatable - for (say) 10 gallons, 80 pints, I'd need 20LB of sugar. "Stella" would be cheaper (and about as tasty, IMO), so, as they say - "Labour Saving" -- but, "Whuuuurp!!!!"

afternoon folks no its not jeremy kyle but your one and only AA grumpy.

now i couldnt help myself with this one this had to be the post of the week.

in fact im still smiling and chuckling to myself as i write. ( P.S dont worry the van from rampton will be here soon to collect me)

A JUDGE hit out at bargain booze yesterday after hearing a thug on the dole drank 24 cans of Stella A DAY.

Nicky WELFARE, who gets £60.40 a week Jobseeker’s Allowance, sank a crate of the strong lager along with two bottles of cider.

Outraged judge Philip Statman asked the layabout’s lawyer: “Where does he get the money for 24 cans of Stella a day?

And he told 21-year-old Welfare: “You are a walking advertisement for those who say that now, in the community, alcohol is far too readily available at far too cheap a price.

Welfare was up for sentencing at Maidstone Crown Court after admitting criminal damage.

He wrecked a petrol station shop by setting off a fire extinguisher as a pal tried to make off with two crates of Stella Artois. The court heard he had rarely worked since leaving school with no qualifications — and turned to drink because he was bored.

Welfare, of Strood, Kent, paid for his enormous quantities of booze through his state benefit and scrounging money off relatives.

A friend said last night: “He takes advantage of cut-price offers when they’re on.

“What with that and poncing a few cans off friends all the time he just about manages to keep up. He gets a bit of extra cash here and there which goes on drink, too.

A crate of Stella costs a mere £15.65 at Welfare’s local Tesco. But supermarkets sometimes reduce the price to just £10. Welfare’s mum Jane — in her 40s — said she threw him out a fortnight ago.

She added: “He used to work on building sites but kept falling asleep on the job.

“Now he’s out of work and he bums money off his family to help pay for his booze.

Welfare was given a suspended eight-week jail term and ordered to do 120 hours of community service. He will also be made subject to a curfew.

His pal Daniel Brown, 25, got a 48-week suspended sentence and 200 hours community service for criminal damage and driving offences.

Why should the majority be persecuted because of the minority. Hard working people are surely entitled to buy cheap booze aren't they.

I dont think benefit money should be used to but cigarettes or alcahol.

Its wrong for the taxpayer to subsidise the idle pi$$ heads. Give them vouchers that can only be used for essentials and cannot be exchanged for fags and booze. If they want to get rat-arsed let them get off the behind and get a job to pay for it

In the state I live in they give you an access card but the lazybutts who get them trade in for other things...like booze & smokes, etc. They get the cash for it.

I'm here mate as always :wah:

To answer swimming Maggie first..... I have no problem with anyone who drinks that pays for their booze by any other means than theft or benifit.

I do however have a big problem with people solely on benifit buying cut price booze and ciggs and cannibis come to that.

I have mentioned my odious neighbour before so apologies to those where i am repeating myself. She is an example of 'Britains middle generation'. Left school, had kids, never worked from the day she left school and has no intention of doing so. She has the council house, free rent, council tax and every benifit going. I was astonished when she came to me ranting that her doctor had taken her off disability allowence. I never knew she was disabled and then she explained that she was 'depressed'. Well she's not depressed when she gets her giro and the first thing she does is go to 'Asda' and stocks up on the cheap booze long before she buys food or clothes for her kids. Her next priority is to visit her dealer for her cannibis that by the way she skins up and smokes infront of her small children. She climbs out of bed around 2 in the afternoon and until 2 in the morning, she is sat on facebook bragging about how drunk she is getting. Her children are dirty and ragged having to get themselves up for school and breakfast depends on if there's any food in the filthy house.

My neighbour is one of thousands bleeding this country dry in benifits. She has contributed nothing to this country and has no intention of doing so. She is over-weight and bone idle. When i told her that the government was going to force some mothers into work, her answer was to get pregnant again.

Why do i get so annoyed with folk like this and why should it matter to me?

Because everything i have..... i have worked for from the day i left college sometimes holding down three jobs to pay the mortgage. I have paid my tax all my life. I don't spend recklessly on credit cards or loans. Yet when i drive home of a night, this neighbour is a regular sight outside the local pub with a pint in her hand. She can find money for a new tattoo but her kids are in rags. :-5

What a disgrace to the human race.:-5 My neighbor across the street is on welfare but has to work 9-5 everyday to get some benefits...she wants to get off the welfare & has been taking classes to better herself. She doesn't bother anybody but her bf is an arsehole who does not lift a finger. I feel bad for her sometimes.

My neighbour actually thinks it's big and even brags on facebook about how drunk she is getting of a night. When i look after the take-away weekends, she phones up for pizza and wants it delivered to her house :-5 Even when i was holding down three jobs to pay the mortgage, i could not afford to go to the pub and send out for pizza. I'm only in the position i am now because i also invested my money over the years and it's now come to fruition. Having said that, I've just had to part with 40% of all my savings in tax to the government so my neighbour can carry on getting her giro :-5:-5

They changed the whole welfare system years ago...if you want your benefits you have to work at least 20 hrs a week, etc. She works 40 hrs, gets health insurance through her work, etc. Her sister who also has a baby, works full time & goes to school full time and gets up at 6am everyday. I have to give it to them both, they are trying to get out of the hole.:)

The police have visited her over complaints from other neighbours that she's smoking pot in the street and in front of kids so they are watching her.

It's not that i'm jealous of her lifestyle, more just disgusted with it that hard working tax payers are responsible for her cut price booze, fags and dope. All the time our government just hands it out so easilly, she and many others have no incentive to contribute to society. I remember last year when the British Legion were short of volunteers to man the poppy stalls. In desperation i asked her to do a morning in the local supermarket and she never showed up. He boyfriend told me she didn't get out of bed until 3 in the afternoon that day :-5:-5

Who would be jealous of her lifestyle? I'm sure many American's would be, well the ones who collect welfare & don't do squat but have to work their mandatory 20 hrs., etc. It is disgusting though that we all work our butts off to have the government kiss their sorry arses.:-5

Mr O called in there a few months ago to give her little girl her birthday present and insisted on standing in the front garden to talk to her. When i asked why, he said he had never smelt a house so rancid in his life and was choking on the smell of cat and dog urine and poo.

Have you called welfare?

We have a woman ( I use the term lightly) who used to leave her kids to go off to another state for holidays. How does a welfare mum afford holidays?

Well listen up people for an education..............what you do is, make sure you only have sex with Aboriginals........You get a higher payout if your child is indiginous. Then you keep having them. You are then able to pay for a house in cash from your bank account. Then when other members of the family follow suit you then take over the guardianship of their children which gives you even more money.

I've been going about this welfare thing all wrong. I should be taking a leaf out of this womans book.

Oh btw, DHS and welfare won't touch her because you can't just willy nilly take away half cast children into welfare because that might be politically incorrect and people are afraid of the throw back to the old days.

This woman is not as stupid as her mothering and household skills would lead you to believe.

The victims in all of this is not the tax payer but the kids left behind to be looked after by a 16 year old that is incapable of making sure there is food in the house. Even for the baby.
