"Australians actually spend less time entertaining friends than any of 30 other countries surveyed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The findings indicate Australians have little time to spend on what was once regarded with pride as a national pasttime, having a beer and a snag (sausage) with mates.

Now, just three per cent of time dedicated to leisure is used entertaining friends, compared with 43 per cent in Turkey.

Instead of socialising, Australians spend 41 per cent of their leisure time watching television or listening to radio.

The OECD's Society At A Glance report also explodes the myth that Australians are devoted sportsplayers.

Just six per cent of free time is spent on sport - one percentage point below the average.

However, Bob Cummins, a professor of psychology at Deakin University, said the looming recession could bring Australians back to the barbecue and the backyard.

"Perhaps one of the reasons we don't connect so much with other people may be the level of wealth in the country," he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"If the threat of the recession becomes strong that threat will create social cohesion."

BBQ is still the most favourite passtime in our family.

Summer & barbies love it,probably not as popular in the cities as in the country .

Some people take the barbying (if that is a word) a bit to far,it's meant to be quick & casual & then a few drinks thrown in.

A card game or just a good talk & get together is what it is all about.

I won't give that up for any TV:driving:

I think that it should be said that per capita Australians actually put in more working hours and unpaid overtime than in any other country. .........That just burst eveyones bubble didn't it. The Unions are now dead and enterprise bargaining and workchoices took over . Our 38 hour week disappeared when the last liberal government got in but before then when Hawke helped remove the last of the powerful Unions. (which I may add he was secretary of) so now we are overworked and underpaid ...................until the economic crisis trully hits the fan here, that's when Australia always comes to the fore. Things change when we are hurting...until then we are a bit like sheep and just go with the flow.

As far as sport goes I dont' know one child in my district that does not play a sport or has an outdoor hobby. Adults pleasure in watching these sports is at an all time high (probably becuase as MrsK said it's a country thing.) Problems in the market and on the land make people intergrate more, Sometimes for information, sometimes just to get out and off the land for social intermingling.

I think the study should stipulate whether it was put together in the cities or the regional areas. I was sucked into regional footy ages ago I never miss a "Wildcats" game.
