Compare these two news items.

Mother faces prison for trying to get son into better school - Telegraph

She may have broken the rules but surely for the benefit of her childrens education.

She faces a prison term

Daily Express | UK News :: Blears' quit call

This woman did virtually the same thing but for reasons of greed. To claim more expenses. Not once but 3 times in one year.

She gets to keep the money and an assurance from the Fees Office in the House of Commons that it was approved

They're evidently different actions though.

If you have a group of members issued with a book of rules and they stick to the rules and subsequently people criticize the actions then what's wrong is the rule book, not the members. It goes tell me what to do, here's what you're restricted to, thank you here's my list of what I did, thank you here's your expenses cheque. It would make a lot more sense to pay the buggers a quarter million a year, there's far more corporate board members taking home far more than that with far less justification and very little attempt at public service thrown in.

It could be argued that neither broke the rules as such, just manipulated them, for their own means. Its the motive of each of the women that creates a perception of double standards. The mothers motives were essentially moral in that her intention was to get what she percieved to be a better education for her kids. Hazel Blears motivation was purely greed. For no other reason other than to get away with as much as she could squeeze from the system - with full support from the people who regulate the system

I agree, the mother doesn't deserve to go to prison, I think it was a genuine mistake, but as for Ms Blears that is just beyond belief, no wonder this country is in deep financial trouble with all the money these MP's claim as expenses. They ought to try and live on a normal persons income, or a pension as in my case:-1
