The vitreous is a ball of gel that lives in the main chamber of your eyeball. It's gelatinous texture comes from gooey protein coated fibers that run front to back. The vitreous fibers clump together to form knots that cast shadows on the retina. When you turn your eyes they drift and swirl around, but because they are anchored somewhere, they tend to return to a habitual location.

As you get older, two things happen. These fibers start to contract (or maybe they get shorter because of tangling) and the fluid spaces between them get larger. Now the floaters get more numerous and move more freely. You see more floaters the older you get.

Another thing. When the fibers contract, they pull the vitreous base, the bag that the ball of vitreous lives in, away from your retina. This is a rite of passage we all go through in our 40s and 50s. For most of us it's only consequence is flashing lights like sparks occasionally in the dark, and more floaters. But for some unfortunate few, there are other consequences. If you are highly nearsighted or have a hole or tear in the retina, when the vitreous base pulls away, it may result in a retinal detachment. If your macula, the center of vision, is loose at all, or has any small cysts that may result from diabetes or high stress, the macula may lift off and result in a macular hole. Or the macula may become puckered- something we call preretinal gliosis.

Another common occurrence is that when the vitreous base pulls off the retina, it takes with it little nerve packing cells called glial cells. At the optic nerve head there is a big wad of gleal cells, and this may pull off, resulting in a huge, dense floater shaped like a smoke ring. I have seen many of these in people's eyes.

Here's hoping your vitreous separation is uneventful. If you end up with some familiar floaters that always appear in the same place, I suggest you give them affectionate nicknames. That may help you keep a good sense of humor about them. Don't name any after me, please.:)

A few years ago i'd been given some Skin So Soft bath oil from a friend at work, that night after work we went to the gym and had a sauna afterwards.

While we were in the sauna i had a bright idea:yh_idea why not make the sauna smell nice while we were in it.

I went and got the SSS oil came in and poured some on the stones...BUFFF!!

The flames shot up and caught the ceiling of the sauna (wooden) if the owner had have seen us running around with no clothes on wetting towels to put the fire out he'd have had a seizure.

I swear i've never laughed so much in my life (i'm giggling now just thinking of it):yh_giggle

:wah: abbey

but a word of warning - don't ever use skin so soft in the bath without first pouring in half a ton of non slip gravel (I speak from bitter experience)

and, arnold, I've met those irritating little flies that dance in front of your eyes and had someone else say to me "What's that irritating little fly that's dancing in front of your eyes?" So they are very real. Hopefully. (And there's only ever one)

But one of the fun rides on the pleasure beach at Blackpool have problems with someone pouring detergent into the water, the bubbles go everywhere, and they have to shut the ride down to clear it, i think its one of the workers doing it so they get an extra break. :sneaky:
