The amount of tipping - or tipping at all depends on several factors.
I always tip - always - never a Percent or required amount
the amount would definately be determined on the server & establishment.
It's a tough life - you got to work for your money Honey..
if some of the servers would just smile - they'd make more $$$$
most young are not as trained - efficient - become robotic, but their Tattoo's are cool and their make-up is perfect and they twirl & fling their hair & they're busy flirting & Friday Night Plans, and they look like they never eat.....:wah:
I don't require alot - friendly, smile, personality will re-direct irritated hungry pains and a delayed meal, and make that attentive server $$$.

I always tip.
When I go out to lunch it is usually to visit and socialize. On the occassion that I am alone, I am reading. I want to be able to sit and linger and since I know the table is not turning over, which would generate more tips for the server, I compensate the server for this when the restarant is full.
Otherwise, I leave a bit over 20%, more if they are exceptional, and I always leave at least $2 even on a $6 breakfast.
I am treated well. I am remembered and I can come in and enjoy my meal in leisure or, if rushed, I get speedy service and my bill with my meal.
It's a win-win situation. We are all happy.

were they late in coming over with the menu?
were the drinks served timely manner?
was the waitress polite, nice and helpful?.......and did she smile?...........that right there makes it or breaks it for me....
just because she is tired is no reason to be like that.......everyone is tired.
was the entree correct, was it hot, and did it look presentably, or was their old brown fries from yesterday?

They aren't "Preformers" they are "Providers" of a service and because of that I always tip. It is back breaking hard work try it you will have a new understanding of food service industry. The server can't help it if the food taste bad or isn't just right they just deliver it. I'm not going to take the taste of the food out on the "Server" they live for their tips. They would have to throw the food at me to not get a 20% tip. :wah:

True and that might knock my tip down a few percent. That is their job to server and be polite and tend to your needs while your there. The taste of the food how it looks and if it is cooked on time is the kitchens fault.

Oh I agree with you on that one. Usually we go to Applebee's and the servers are very attentive...I've never had a probs with them. I've had a few instances where the waitress just takes off to who knows where and we're left waiting:-5...actually got up from the table & left.

I despise tipping.
But.... for me going out is very limited and usually is to the same place on a friday for lunch so the lady there knows us and serves us with great efficiency and is wonderful so I always tip her. Usually I tip her a dollar value but it works out to be about 20% of the bill.

If they were mediocre 15%
If they really really sucked but there were extenuating circumstances like the place was packed and they did the best they could 10%
If they were rude Ill get a free meal from the mngr.

I always tip the server. Most servers are underpaid and rely on the tips to make up the difference. I agree though, if they are having a bad day at home, leave it at home. It is the customers that pay them so they should at all times be friendly, helpful and on their toes. Yes, their attitude does affect how much I leave them.

They are now self-contained.....a huge machine picks up the trash, all bins and lifts it back onto the ground........which then topples everywhere.

Mailman gets a card on Christmas. I should make as much as he does. He should leave me a tip.

I've been with the same guy for maybe 30 years now -- maybe more. Our girls got their first haircut from him and he kept them looking good into their teens (when all girls start to do stupid stuff with their hair). Then, he was the guy I took them to for him to fix the bad bleach job that turned orange or the bad haircut that resulted in them not wanting to leave the house...........
I get my hair cut every 4-5 weeks (and colored), depending on the time of the year and style. He's a fellow I knew from school and we talk about everything under the sun. He's also an Episcopalian and has held my family in prayer through the ups and downs of those "teen years" and aging parents.
He's a person I 'unload on'. He knows when I'm p o'd at the hubby or annoyed with a friend. We talk about our health issues, diet, loss of family and friends. He's my greatest source for good reading material and live theater and movies. At times he has been better than any paid theropist could be.
I used to buy him a June birthday gift and a Christmas gift, but when the pressure of Christmas giving got too overwhelmiing, so I doubled his tip and did not let the birthday/holiday gift giving burden me. Now, if I find something, I buy it for him. If I don't, I don't worry about it anymore.
I look at my hairdressers tip as money well spent on my emotional well being. I laugh, I have fun, I unburden myself, I learn new things, and my hair looks good so I feel really good about myself.
As we are both getting older, I am growing concerned about eventually losing him......................... both as a hairdresser, but mostly as a friend.

However, if you leave a 20% tip for mediocre service, the server will likely assume that they need not improve. Why should they, they must be doing a good enough job, they got 20%? Kinda sends the wrong message!

If the service is good then I........................... I not give tip to them. I just said good work dude and if the service is bad then i give tip and said your service is really bad and i hope next time you 'll do good.
