Homework help!
Since most of you guys are parents I bet you just loooove helping people with their homework, right??? *bites finger*
I HATE debating current controversial blah blah governmental blah blah topics that go nowhere and no one can resolve blah blah blah. (I'm such a scholar, aren't I?) So naturally I've waited till the last minute to pick out a paper topic for my government class. Here are my restrictions. The paper must cover a topic that:
"1.) is currently controversial, 2.) impacts or has the potential to impact our national government or our Constitutional rights, 3.) have historic roots of at least 50 years and 4.) have clear pro and con aspects."
I don't want to do something traditional like abortion or gun control or marijuana. Any ideas on something fun I could write about?

Boy this is a tough one..
Current : Stem Cell research, not sure if it would meet the historical roots of 50 years.
The death penalty definately cover all the requirements.
IMMIGRATION meets all your requirements.
Just a few ideas don't know if any with strike you.

How about religon and politics-the puritan influence on social policy? Has an impact today, is highly controversial, had a major effect in the past in bringing about things like prohibition has it been for the good or ill of society as a whole and is it likely to be in the future.

I.R.S.
Lawful or unlawful ?
Suspect tactics.
Seizures.
Intimidation through harrassment.
Theres a plethora of information out there on methods the I.R.S. has used against U.S. citizens to disrupt and essentially halt their lives. Its a wide open subject everyone has an opinion about.
Oh Ill just write it for you ok ?

the eminent domain cases really get my hackles up (you'd be surprised how long it took me to choose that phrase from a long list
). If you really want to cheat, look at the thread titles in the current events forum. You'd probably get most of your bibliography from there! :-6

Chonsi, this is college level.
Wow you guys have really come up with some excellent ideas. I like the emminent domain (why pay property tax if you don't really "own" your land, eh?), freedom of the press (do they have the freedom to lie?) and I really like gmc's broad topic of religion influenced politics. (Isn't it hard NOT to bring religion into it sometimes, since "doing what's right" is often a wee bit religious? But where's the line?)
You guys have been really helpful, thanks. Now I need a topic paragraph. Don't worry, I'm doing that on my own!

Chris, I would rather rip out a paper on something I can BS my way through than do a paper on Algebra or Calculus. Are you good at math? If so, I am extremely jealous. But I'll know who to come to for my *cough* remedial math help!
I don't know why I can do it if it's in the form of a physics or chemistry equation, but when they slap it down in a math text I get all confused and backwards.

You have no idea how boring this class is, LOL!
I'm sure your Western Civ class is much more fun. My prof just likes to let us debate over whether the consitution should be easy to change...I mean, duh. Everyone has the same opinion on most of the issues, and if you try to play devil's advocate the 18 year olds get all big eyed and start to stutter. (I was on the wrong course of study for a year thanks to a horrible counselor, so now I'm in this class which is technically a prereq class that first semester students take, but it's one of my last classes at this school. So you can see the frustration.)

I saw an old Doonsebury cartoon in college once. The professor was droning on and the students scribbled notes. then the professor started making outlandish statements about the government, but the students kept scribbling notes unchanging. The professor finally tosses up his hands and walks out because no one's paying attention. The last frame is of a student scribbling with a thought balloon something like: Man this is great! You never hear this stuff in high school. :wah:

And who's rights would be equal, it's a concept that will never happen. No one want to give up the rights they think they have to others, that would in their mind take away their rights..:-5 It will be debated till the end of time, and there will never be equal rights. Our society doesn't want everyone to be equal.. it's all about power and who has the most..I call it the bigger you know what theory..
