Am i worrying needlessly?

Post by Oscar Namechange »

I live in a narrow lane and on thursday, a young black man came out of the entrance of the field outside my house straight into the path of a neighbours car who thank god was only doing approx 20 mph and thank god it wasn't a kid.

The front of the bike was mangled as was the front of the neighbours car. I went out to find the young man in a state of shock. He had come off the bike, slid across the gravel and taken the skin off his legs as well as having a nasty cut to the knee.

I offered to call an ambulance but he said he was fine although bleeding badly from the knee. I went in the house and got spray disenfectant and bandages and patched him up while Mr O called his mum to come and get him.

I just didn't think about anything when i was mopping his blood up but when i mentioned it to my Doc yesterday, he insisted i make an appointment for blood tests.

I'm quite worried now :(:(:(

As long as you don't have any open cuts on your hands, etc. I think you will be fine.

You need to get blood work done just to be safe. Next time have surgical gloves you can put on. Great that you helped the young man, but protect yourself next time. ;)

I know that having had a son, always a cut or something needing a bandage and cleaning up, I never thought about the blood issue. If it is bleeding wash it and fix it. Never a thought to anything I might get from the blood. Moms just fix the boo boo and continue on.

Do you live on a film set for Die Hard ? More goes on up your lane ( no thats not a euphamism ) than in an average city centre.

Might do you a bit of good. Nothing wrong with old Vince. He seems to know more about the economy than anybody else - and before anybody else

My lane that goes up our rear entrance (no that's not a euphamism) see's more action than a busy highway. It is a constant source of entertainment. Some woman even managed to smash into the front of my car whilst it was in the drive down here. Perhaps i should start a journal called ' My lane and daily events'. :wah:

My SIL works at a hospital and has had 3 or 4 needle sticks they alway have to do blood tests but she has always been lucky.

I doubt you are really at risk but theres no harm in checking.

I was curious about the same thing, but had actually decided not to ask until I saw Abbs had beat me to it. I really think it's no more than a physical description, but it's interesting, nonetheless.

yes i agree with Accountable i think.

its funny it didnt even enter my head that oscar had said a young black man ,, the fact she said black i mean ,, i never noticed, however i did imagine in my mind a young black man crashed in the road and oscar helping:wah:

Abbey asking that question ,, first made me realise i had'nt even noticed, then made me think a bit about why had she said it,, again the same as accountable i thought well she was just describing the man, and i know some people would say, but if he was white you probably would not have said so:thinking: but when i thought about it more ,, i have to say if it had happened to me its entirely possible i would have said a young black man:-3 and i dont know why:-3:o It is quite interesting innit:)

I used to do this. I thought I was being descriptive but when I was asked if Id have said the same were he white I realized probably not.

So I consider myself educated and no longer describe persons by their color or nationality unless its pertinent to the story. Speaking for myself it was probably ignorance and am grateful for someone pointing it out to me.

My hubs doesn't vote either...but does like to have a good b&m about politics...shut up I says cuz it doesn't count if you don't vote. My Laura voted for the first time in November...she went against all her friends who went with McCain. Very proud that I'm raising a nice liberal daughter.:wah:

I've found I naturally don't use race/ethnicity unless actually describing someone physically. Sometimes a person will actually say "you didn't say he/she was black!" :-2

This is with all due respect. Please dont misinterpret my thoughts as something other than a long standing curiousity

Ive never understood your views on race relations. In fact if Im not mistaken youve out right denied race as pertinent to any topic other than to address racism.

Over the years Ive seen you become quite animated over the subject. At first I wasnt sure if its for personal and protective reasons but then I started wondering about your denial to include race as a valid social issue.

Perhaps Ive misinterpreted and perhaps its none of my business but your stand has always been quite confusing to me because I thought we were on the same page yet you have this thing about race I just cant quite figure out.

Again this is just a simple curiousity on my part and if Ive got it all screwed up then maybe Im being a dullard, thats always a possibility.

(sorry for the sidetrack)

I think every person should be proud of their culture, their ethnicity if you will. One group - black people - were forced into a collective subculture because of our racism. The culture they formed is one of which to be proud. But make no mistake, being black does not require one to adopt that culture, and assuming a person lives a certain way because of his or her skin color is no more fair than assuming that I wear kilts and hang tartan on my walls because my name is Scottish.

I abhor the very word "race" when applied to anything other than competition. It divides unecessarily. Skin color is a physical attribute just like eye or hair color, height or weight. When telling a story or describing a work situation, skin color is irrellevant in almost all situations. I guess I rushed my last post too much to get that across.

Does that help? :)

Im with you except for the word race thing. First and foremost we are all human beings. Thats my take. I cant deny races though. I dont think of it as a dirty word. To me it merely describes the variances of the human race. It only divides because of perception. Thats the real problem. Culture is an integral part of race and in my view these things should be recognized and celebrated. Collectively as humans I love that we are all different in some ways. Its a treasure trove of knowledge and experiences to be shared amongst ourselves. Theres beauty in this. Different doesnt have to mean seperate.

Think how interesting life could be as you walk down the street and if you spent 15 minutes with 5 people of another culture other than your own !!!

Your life would be greatly enriched.

I know this !
