New Position Proposal

Post by chonsigirl »

Well, the principal called me into her office today-and offered me a position at my school teaching science with a definite increase in a position of authority. I had a hint of it during the day, but did not know what to think about it until I heard it. I have a day to think of it.

She was very nice, and it makes me wonder how things turned out this way. I was a statistical figure to cut from the staff, until a vacancy appeared. I've done several interviews, but have had no replies yet. I wonder if we were placed on hold on purpose until population figures/staffing bottomed out.

I think it would be nice to stay at my school, I really did not want to go. The extra duties would be time consuming, but I would have had there anywhere I would have went.

What would you have thought if you knew you had to go-then were told you had a chance to stay?

I always appreciate input as I ponder this tonight.

Go for it immediately. You can always do something about it later, but grasp the moment. If you don't, you will either be "out", or going nowhere ever again.

How does the level of responsibility / authority stack up against the school farther away with the good discipline?

I know it's measuring the known against the new but, if you're stepping up a grade, doing so with well behaved pupils would be a distinct advantage.

I thought of you minks when I wrote this. You stayed where you were, with all the changes. Did it turn out all right for now?

So far so good yes, I am still employed while others were laid off and I am glad I stayed because I could have been a member of the last hired first fired at a different place. Given my extra duties has kept my days filled too and I think I proved to the company that they made the right choice when they let my co-worker go who was not as wide spread with his skills as myself.

I'm glad it turned out for you, minks. I think this will be a good thing to do, because I will get to stay with my students and do some other things that are good to learn.

If they tend to work on last in first out then staying is really the only sensible choice. Go for it, it's a no-brainer.

If you're in a higher position, you may be able to influence your pupils more.

Take it and keep your other options open as well. You can still keep applying elsewhere and having been promoted within your school looks better on the CV

Bill's right. But just imagine your students' reactions if the find out that you had a chance to go but decided to stay. That's a life-changing impact for some of them.

Thats how our town is doing it albeit for different reasons. The teachers union hasnt agreed on a contract yet and the budget had to be submitted. Theyll let x amount of teachers go with the assumption many will be hired back possibly in a different position.

Sounds like you already know what you want to do.

Im glad they value you.

You know the old saying chonsi, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush! Do it and be happy it worked out for you to stay where you wanted to be anyway. (Pride can leave you hungry)

You mentioned that your current school is not too far from your home, so the extra time you may have to put in for your new job, could be considered a wash with the extra time spent driving further to another school further away. Best of luck, & as always, best wishes! :)

And kids know everything, even though I never told them.

But I did smile with delight today, after I told the principal yes. And went back into my classroom with my little darlings that cause havoc once in awhile, and tell them they might see me next year for science! Oh, their faces were a sight to see, like oh no, not her again! :wah:

chons, stay where you are. I can't even imagine teaching science to students...it sounds like fun. There are loads of sites online you can tap into, etc. If you stay, I think you made the right decision. Let us all know what you decide.:-4

I'm just finishing week 1. Of course, Monday was dental & medical appointments and Wed-Fri is professional development, but it's not planning lessons. :D
