Is it just me? When I hear the name Department of Homeland Security it brings up sinister images like the Nazi SS or Soviet KGB.

Not just you. Yesterday I watched a documentary about Randy Weaver and Ruby Ridge. I wonder how many more Ruby Ridges will happen in the near future.

God bless her. :yh_flag
The military is our homeland security, which is why I wonder why we need a separate department under that name.

My husband used to feel strange about that new name, when the Coast Guard and their abilities were classified under that term too.
The term itself always sounded paranoid, or suspicious. Like something archaic out of the 1930s, a shadow on the wall, with only Humphrey Bogart able to figure things out. But he's not in charge.

Begrudgingly I admit it was probably a valid maneuver when it was implemented after 911 although the direction they took it was unconstitutional in my opinion. Very Cheney-ish thing to do.
Between the FBI, CIA, Border Patrol, Coast Guard, Navy, satellite imagery, face software recognition, cameras at intersections, in neighborhoods, high tech listening devices perched atop telephone poles in high crime areas etc etc etc to an average dolt such as myself it would appear they have all the bases covered without Homeland Security.
On the other hand Im not delusionaly paranoid and dont worry about being locked up in a concentration camp in Minneapolis MN. I freely and frequently am in touch with my congressman evaluating his job performance. So far the worst thats happened is he called my house and I locked the doors and pulled the blinds for 2 days but so far Im free to come and go as I please.

Acc, we just traveled to Ireland..home security was a joke. We were last to get our luggage & went through it in NY...there was no one around:wah:. Came back on Sat, got the luggage & were told "you have to go through Customs and have your bag checked, blah, blah, blah. Ended up getting our luggage & walked right out of the airport to our limo...no bother with the customs, etc.:wah:

We came through JFK airport. Newark in Joisey? Yeah, that is a wanker city:wah: Yeah, we ducked it allright and we had loads of stuff...I know this will sound boring, but we were in Kerry and bought the last of Lush's shampoo...big bottles of it...breezed right through. Bummed though as Lush is discontinuing it:-5Got through with cartons of smokes, etc.
