Post by farmer giles »

i was walking the two pups in the rain and i saw one of the dog owners a woman of 65 with her huge black lab ,the dog is really friendly and plays with the two pups and always comes up to me for a stoke and tickle .the lady was a bit quite and i asked whats up ??

she said with a voice breaking with emotion to tell the truth i'm really upset i have to have monty put to sleep on wednesday he has a massive growth in his throat and i just cant stand to know he is suffering ,monty is 14 years old i dont know how much longer he would live any way ,i have to be cruel to be kind i dont want him to suffer :(:(

it gave me a massive lump in my throat ,imagine having a dog since he was a pup all those years then have to have him put down :(:( that house is gona seem very empty :(

has any one ever had to have their dog put to sleep it must be hard:thinking:

It is incredibly hard, have taken a much loved 17 year old springer in when he lost complete control of his body functions. With a young baby in the house just starting to crawl it was not possible to keep him alive any longer, we'd pushed him on through the previous year as it was.

The next springer, I begged and pleaded to be allowed to take him to the vets, or to even call a vet out when it became apparent that he was dying. I was overruled and the poor dog drowned from fluid in his lungs, slowly. I was disgusted with the selfish person who decided that having his pet at home to die with him was better than having him put to sleep. I will never fathom out why he thought that was the better option, pure cruelty in my mind.

So, yes putting a dog to sleep is incredibly hard, but in the long run it is actually the best thing to do for the animal, and believe me, it's so much more peaceful.

Yes, we have had 3 dogs put down, we have our 5th dog now. One dog died of a heart attack. Each dog we have cried buckets over - they are a part of the family and they leave a dreadful hole. One of the dogs, Freddy, I had to bury him myself in the garden after the vet had been. I buried him under tree roots so he would not be disturbed by future gardeners, and I cried buckets all the time I was digging - I had to do it before my son came back from school, as I didn't want him to see our dear dog buried. My husband was away working for the week.

Loosing a dog by having him 'put down' is an awful experience - you feel like you are a murderer, but then you realise that you have saved your lovely friend from awful pain which, in any case, would still end in his death. Some consolation, but not a lot - you have lost a dear friend. Freddy was in his 16th year.

I have literally had at least one dog, usually multiples, since the day I was born...so you can probably imagine how many times I've gone thru this. It definitely gets harder as an adult, I think because we spend so much time nurturing them from the day we bring them home. Putting down a dog is an awful decision to make...it's like chosing to put a member of the family down. It's been quite a few years since I've had to, but it still brings tears to my eyes. If I even think about it with my "babies" I have now, it can reduce me to a blubbering idiot.

Pet disposal became my job after big brother Ike left. Though I only wrote about one dog, we always had several running around. Sister Angel and brother Daryl were dog magnets. When one of our dogs got old and lost control of it's bodily functions and/or couldn't get around well anymore, dad would say, "Hop, it's time to get the shovel and take ol' red for a walk. Don't let 'im see the gun". I hated that chore but it had to be done.

Daryl never would do it. Not even when he was in highschool.

It's something I think about a lot. My one dog is around 16, has arthritis, catarats, and is hard of hearing. Just about the time I think maybe it's time, she plays like a puppy.

I can't imagine doing that to one of my own...it must have been so hard for you to do! :(

I don't know if it's a keen understanding or instinct, but I've had dogs do that in the past too. Sounds like this decision is pulling you apart. I'm so sorry. :(

We got Sheba from Battersea so badly beaten she couldnt swallow properly and hid behind furniture for months. She adored our kids and was like a second mum to them sadly she became so ill that I had to take her to be PTS at age 15. on 27-7-1992

Abby was only 4 at the time it took a couple of weeks and then one day as we were driving to town she said 'mummy....our doggy is never coming back is she'?

I hadnt cried until that point but I had to pull over because I just couldnt see the road any more.

Then came Max he was only one day old whn I first held him the owner hadn't expected puppies and was going to have them all put down..I couldnt put him back and let that happen so we said we would have him.. He grew into an enormous thing like a wookie with a bad hair day! But he was so soft, so gentle, just a big hairy baby, he developed lymphoma and at the age of just 8 I had to walk him to the vet and have him PTS on 24-7-2001

He died in my arms and I honestly felt as if someone had cut my arms off I was totally unable to do anything for him.

I grieved for my friend and never thought I would be able to love another dog but since then 3 have found a way into my life and into my heart..The thought of losing them terrifies me but I know the time will come and I only hope I have the courage to do whats best for them when it does..

We had to have a german shephard put to sleep one time. The vet, who was friends with my sister, called her to call and warn me that my husband was taking it so badly.

Up to this time round, i have always had rescue dogs late in their lives. This means that i lost them very quickly.

I know that one day soon i will lose two of mine to old age. When saying goodbye, i have always asked myself the following:

1) Did he ever go hungry?

2) Was he ever shut out in the cold?

3) Was there ever a time i wasn't pleased to see him?

4) Was there ever a time when i didn't give him enough love?

5) Was there ever a time when he needed veteriny treatment and i didn't get it immediately?

6) Was there a time when i didn't want to play with him?

7) Was there ever a time i couldn't be bothered to walk him?

8) Was there ever a time i thought he was a nuisence?

When i can honestly answer NO to all these questions..... then i am at peace with their passing.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. R.L. Binyon

I would never have another dog put to sleep at the vet's, it takes far too long.

I would hire a marksman and have him/her shot, preferably whilst running free.

The pain of losing your dog is too immense to describe, enjoy them Jim. When i lost my last girl she was 14 and i still felt robbed, you just kinda hope they will live forever. :-1
