control robotic limbs by thoughts

Post by farmer giles »

this is scarey

there is now a pc interface chip that allows a monkey to control a robotic limb by the power of thoughts alone

imagine a few years down the road

good for people that cant move for themselves :)

but how long before we have robotic soldiers ,with a camera on that can be used to fight wars from thousands of miles away

or how about say you had a dream where you were involved in a fight with someone you did not like imagine your horror to wake and find your robot has your enemy's head in its hand :-3:-3:-3

Both links are fascinating!

You have to think how far we've come since the 60's when computer technology was in it's infancy. Did you know that when Apollo first landed on the moon, the power used to run its onboard computer was less than the power needed to run a calculator today, apparently.

In the 80s we had a computer that filled a massive room and needed special air filters. Today you have more power and more storage capacity in your palm pilot or blackberry.

Technology has raced ahead in the last 30 years.

It would be wonderful if machines could replace damaged or lost body parts, much like the Robin Williams film, Bicentennial Man (1999), where he played the robot 'Andrew' and was able to create robotic body parts. There'd no longer be a need for donor organs or a long waiting list and probably no chance of a body rejecting an organ.

Having invented washing machines and dish washers, it would be great if a house-keeping robot could be invented to allow you to use your time more productively.

However, what would humans do when all the menial tasks were taken from them?

In an ideal world we would head towards a Star Trek generation. Not just for space travel but for learning and exploring. Everyone would be able to continually learn and move forward. We would have more scientists, more physicists, more mathematicians.

But, in reality, we are a war-faring planet. Every new major invention is assessed for its capabilities in a warmongering situation. So, yes, those house-keeping robots probably would be used to launch a war in the Middle East. We could destroy all the people in countries who are at war with us and set robots into producing the oil we need from their countries.

Then we could destroy all people who were our enemies. Then, slowly, our allies. Until whichever nation is most powerful, currently the USA, becomes the only nation to survive. But America is multicultural. Gradually the unwanted citizens would be destroyed until just the army and the President were left. Then just one man. Whoever was in charge of the robots. At least it would be an end to all the wars on our planet. Sadly, it would also be the end of all life on our planet. I should make a movie about this! :wah:

As I said, technology is racing ahead. It will be interesting to see where it goes in the next 50 years.
