Other common names.—Coptis, cankerroot, mouth root, yellowroot.

Habitat and range.—Goldthread is found in damp, mossy woods and bogs from Canada and Alaska south to Maryland and Minnesota. It is most common in the New England States, northern New York and Michigan, and in Canada, where it frequents the dark sphagnum swamps, cold bogs, and the shade of dense forests of cedars, pines, and other evergreens.

Description.—This plant, which in its general appearance somewhat resembles the strawberry plant, is of low growth, being only 3 to 6 inches in height. Its shiny, evergreen leaves, which are divided into three parts, grow directly from the base of the plant. A single small, white, star-shaped flower, which appears from May to August, is borne at the end of each flowering stalk. The plant is appropriately named after the long, slender, creeping, much-branched and frequently matted, bright golden-yellow root.

Part used.—The root, collected in autumn.

Goldenseal is another herb. People somehow got the idea that goldenseal will mask effects of drug use but it does not, according to Drs. I never heard of the two being used to stifle the desire to drink.

Carrots & Night Vision º In Depth (ABC Science)

In the Battle of Britain, in 1940, the British fighter pilot, John Cunningham, became the first person to shoot down an enemy plane with the help of radar. In fact, in WW II, he was the RAF's top-scoring night fighter pilot, with a total of 20 kills. Some pilots were better flying in daylight, while others, like Cunningham, were better at night. His nickname was "Cats' Eyes". The RAF put out the story in the British newspapers that he, and his fellow night pilots, owed their exceptional night vision to carrots. People believed this to the extent that they started growing and eating more carrots, so that they could better navigate at night during the blackouts that were compulsory during WW II.

But this story was a myth invented by the RAF to hide their use of radar, which was what really located the Luftwaffe bombers at night - not human carrot-assisted super-vision.

On one hand, not enough Vitamin A will make you unable to see at night. But lots of Vitamin A can be poisonous - and it definitely will not give you super-human vision at night.

Yes....I am a bit bored too.

So ....

Cut glass without a glass cutter.

Use tin snips and cut under water, smooth rough edges off with knife blade.

As someone who has cut glass for a living.....IMPOSSIBLE....sorry

Remove a broken light bulb.

Stick a bar of soap into jagged edges, use soap as handle.

Turn the bloody electric off first though

Tips on buying shoes

Buy shoes in afternoon, feet tend to swell in the morning.

What ? and have tight shoes after noon for the rest of your life ?

How to kill taste of olive oil.

Add a touch of salt.

Why ? I like the taste......anyway I thought salt enhanced flavours

Keep milk from scorching.

Add a pinch of sugar while cooking and do not stir.

I would suggest that is the best way to scorch milk......try turning the heat down watching it

How to freshen stale nuts.

Stick them in the oven for 15 minutes at 250 degrees.

Get rid of cooking odours.

Boil hand full of cloves in water for 30 minutes. All odours will disappear

OUCH !!! Both these made my eyes water "Boil hand full of cloves"? All skin will disappear too

I think I will just stick with stale nuts....thanks all the same.
I thought I knew more than this until I opened my mouth

if you mix bonding plaster and cement powder in a 50/50 mix you get a good filler that goes off really quick :) you need to add water too

good for wood brick work and can be overpainted in minutes

erm should i mention this to oscar and mutley who were complaining about massive cracks on a different thread :yh_rotfl
