Obummer said he would bring the troops home. In reality, he's just moving the war and troops to Afghanistan.

It wll stop fairly soon i would imagine with the imminent withdrawal of allied troops. However, it will just divert to Afghan with more troops being poured in. The Taliban look pretty undefeatable from what i can see.

It sounds like a Civil War...

Until one or the other side "wins,"

it WON't be over, imho.

On a point of information, what President Obama said was that "They call any timetable for the removal of American troops “surrender,” even though we would be turning Iraq over to a sovereign Iraqi government. But this is not a strategy for success — it is a strategy for staying that runs contrary to the will of the Iraqi people, the American people and the security interests of the United States. That is why, on my first day in office, I would give the military a new mission: ending this war. "

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/14/opini ... .html?_r=1

If you read it he says explicitly that he'll free the armed forces up for additional deployment against the Taliban. "I would pursue a new strategy, and begin by providing at least two additional combat brigades to support our effort in Afghanistan. We need more troops, more helicopters, better intelligence-gathering and more nonmilitary assistance to accomplish the mission there. I would not hold our military, our resources and our foreign policy hostage to a misguided desire to maintain permanent bases in Iraq."

On a further point of information, as of three weeks ago the number of US troops inside Iraq was 131,000. I'm prepared to bet that figure won't go below 50,000 at any time under this current administration. So much for withdrawal.

I'd quite like to discuss this, even at the risk of quoting my own post to bounce it back and comment.

Does anyone actually disagree? Does anyone think the number of US troops inside the Iraqi borders is going to drop below 50,000 at any time during the next, say, ten years?

June 30: Iraq withdrawal deadline for American troops? is germane for anyone wanting to comment. It's about the "enduring bases". They exist, they're built, they're permanent, they're not being handed over to the Iraqi Government (unless I'm terribly mistaken). Does anyone here think they're being handed over to the Iraqi Government?

Camp Falcon-Al-Sarq, planned to house 5,000 soldiers?

Camp Victory- Al Nasr can house up to 14,000 troops?

Camp Anaconda/Balad Airbase is spread over 15 square miles and is being constructed to accommodate 20,000 soldiers?

Camp Taji "is now a huge U.S. base equipped with a Subway, Burger King and Pizza Hut on the premises"?

Taqaddum Airbase, Camp Fallujuh, Camp Marez?

Al Asad Air Base hosts 17,000 troops?

Camp Speicher "houses several thousand troops"?

Camp Renegade has a dormitory that houses up to 1,664 airmen in 13 buildings with six to eight people to a room?

al-Talil Air Base, with its "second dining facility ...to seat 6,000"?

I'd quite like at least one FG member to try to pretend that the US troop withdrawal from Iraq will be meaningful in some way, as opposed to a permanent army of occupation. Let me copy down President Obama's words, too: "I would not hold our military, our resources and our foreign policy hostage to a misguided desire to maintain permanent bases in Iraq."

Iraq's PM to meet Obama in US is relevant too - "there are still around 130,000 American troops inside Iraq" while "Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is beginning a four-day visit to the US, during which he will meet President Obama at the White House".

"Mr Obama and Mr Maliki will, on the face of it, want a swift and orderly exit of American troops from Iraqi soil"? I bet they will, on the face of it. Those "enduring bases" are the reason it won't happen.
