Its easy to miss sometimes, the goodness that is. We are all inundated with the bad, the stuff that gives us chills and makes us lock our doors at night, hold on tight to your purses, get nervous when we go to the ATM machine. Its on the nightly news, in the newspapers, the violent crimes, the arsons, the wars, how many of our soldiers died today. Its become the fabric of our lives and its never going away.
Yet from time to time Im reminded of the real heart that lives and breathes in all of us. The stuff that gives you chills of another sort, the thing that makes us shine, the goodness, the love that surrounds us all. Its there, sometimes we have to dig to find it, sometimes it takes a tragedy, but its there to be sure. My wife and I bought some things for the refugees over the weekend and brought them to a collecting point that will ship them down to the survivors, our brothers and sisters in the south. What we brought will only help a few people for a little while, cheap shoes, socks, underwear some t shirts, diapers etc. but thats not really the point. We did what we could and thats the point Im after here.
I was overwhelmed with the staggering amount of people lined up waiting to unload their cars, the dozens of people that gave some of their time, a little piece of their lives to help unload and sort the items that were pouring in.
I was overwhelmed with the look in their eyes, they had the look of love and compassion, they looked as if they were doing something important, and they were, we all were.
We were thinking of others, strangers but it didnt matter, in fact it made it that much more gratifying.
Ive seen the worst in people, Ive seen hate and racism and vulgarity beyond comprehension, the kind of thing that strips you of faith in humanity and causes fear.
But from time to time I see what is best in ourselves, the love, the caring, the deep need to give, nurture, aid in times of heartache.
I saw that this weekend, I opened my eyes and took a real long hard look around me, and I was satisfied that we as humans are the most wondrous of all creatures. Im proud of my fellow Americans, my neighbors, my state. Im proud to know that for all of our shortcomings and all of our faults, when push comes to shove we can count on eachother. Thank you ! :-6
