the word Mate in Australia

I'm often asked what Mate really means because it's beyond tourists understandings. for instance international tourists should not use the word mate, mate is used on you if you pass stringent tests. Unless ...............someone says

"mate you're a Dickhe'ad".

what it means and it's connotations,
