Thank you for the congratulations and photographs Rapunzel.
You may wonder why there is such excitement at such an average sized fish but barbel are the most difficult fish to catch and to get in once hooked in the UK. In my last attempts the barbel actually straightened out a forged hook and i lost him and another. Half of the battle with this species of fish is to actually get it safely netted and wieghed. They have a jaw dropping might and strength that has left many frustrated on the bank. This one took me only a few minutes to get in as i was using heavy tackle but i was bowled over by the sheer fight in him.
I did kiss him, she is right :wah:

Kiss it ? eeewwwhhh We have an idiot in this country that does that . :wah: It is illegal in this country to kill a Barbel or to even let one die of neglect. I'm not sure but I believe you can not even put a Barbel in a keep net and they must be returned to the water within a regulated time. The kissing comes from the difficulty in catching one in the first place although I won't be kissing him for a while :wah:

Why is that Abbey? I have been thinking of your comment and thought it could be that you think we kill the fish? I can assure you that this is the most admired freshwater fish in the UK and the fishing fraternity would recoil in horror at the thought of killing this fish. They are a protected species and it is illegal to kill one. They are sought after due to their beauty and great care is taken to reintroduce the fish back into the water as soon as possible. We even have regualtions of how the fish must re-enter the water which is head first and be held for a few moments gently before letting him swim away in order to recover from any shock. Most barbel are marked with a small flourescent spot on their heads in order for them to be monitored and recorded.

How long can they survive out of the water? Freshwater fish can survive for 2 to 3 minutes out of water but anglers have regs never to keep them out that long. They are very quickly recorded, weighed, a quick pic and put back all in a minute at the most.

It is worrying when you have a 25 lb Carp to reel in, net and get on the bank and I have had to almost sit on some to stop them flapping off the protective landing mat to save them injury.

I never give funny answers when someone asks a question.
Walleye is a fish well known in most areas, they prefer to live in the weeds, they are long and thin, and a great eating fish.
We use a boat and motor to get to the most weediest parts of a lake, anchor in and sometimes cast, but mainly just drop your line down with a live minnow on the hook facing sideways...... a lot of other species of fish will also eat the minnows as they are live and what they are looking for under the water.
I wish I could upload a pic for you......but I need my tech here.
just google, 'what does a walleye look like.
