I have particpated in lots of charity events over the years, but my best so far has been the Royal Marines 7 mile endurance course. it involves running around a 7 mile course, which has narrow man size tunnels, completely dark throughout and some of them are really long.You cant see the end and theres mud and water of the tunnel floor.
One of the obstacles is called the sheep dip, which involves being dunked under water and under a concrete slab. You are pushed through and picked up by a person the other side. This course is set in the countryside and depending of the time of year or weather, it can get very muddy.
When i finished i was exhausted, muddy and did,nt know whether to laugh or cry with relief. It was brilliant.
I would do most things for charity. What have you guys done.

What have you done for charity?
My wife invested in a charity for many years called the Labour party. 
She gives her last penny to any cause from children's charities to animal charities to cancer research but i don't have to list the lengths she has gone to in order to provide for them as i know the efforts she has made and is making to this day. We also put two children through school in Africa and now they are grown we are thinking of adopting another two. We don't see that as charity due to the pleasure we both got from their letters and achievements.

Stick money in tins, give all unwanted items to charity shops. Best of all i gave away a lot of my wifes clothes one day, i decided she didnt need them anymore:D i got into a little bit of trouble for that one.

My sister sponsered a child for a while. First the father had left them, then he was dead, then it was the mother who died, etc. The story changed constantly. I don't have much trust in sponsering a child. We have enough children in our own countries that could use the help.

I don't tend to tell people of the charities I donate to ............It's bad taste, you know, 'not proper'

I am actually training in first aid & do volunteer work around town with the ambulance officers. I don't drive the ambulance in the town but I have driven one at an event we went to last year,that was an experience .
I shaved my head last Saturday night,I think that is why I am having trouble keeping warm;):yh_rotfl
Instead of giving a lot of tips when I was in Fiji I asked the village chief if I could sponsor a child to go to school for a year,no free education there.
If all goes well we just might see that child go right through to finish high school.
We plan on going back to visit the village & see how the money is spent,also give a hand at the school with some reading lessons.
A few Aussie schools in NSW do this apparently ,I didn't know of this till our recent visit. There were a group of girls from a private Sydney school who were there for their school hols,they told me all about the programme they had joined in helping the Fijian kids with their school work.
Any name dropping of my favourite charities is fine by me if it helps another person put in more $$$ a cure is one step closer.

Personally I think the guys look 'hot' with the smooth heads and every time they get asked about it, it's another plug for the charity.:-6

Instead of giving a lot of tips when I was in Fiji I asked the village chief if I could sponsor a child to go to school for a year,no free education there.
If all goes well we just might see that child go right through to finish high school.
We plan on going back to visit the village & see how the money is spent,also give a hand at the school with some reading lessons.
A few Aussie schools in NSW do this apparently ,I didn't know of this till our recent visit. There were a group of girls from a private Sydney school who were there for their school hols,they told me all about the programme they had joined in helping the Fijian kids with their school work.
Any name dropping of my favourite charities is fine by me if it helps another person put in more $$$ a cure is one step closer.

Infact im so used to people with very little or no time at all for animals, that they couldnt care less that im giving money to these charities every month. I would agree about the celebrity factor. I usually pay little attention to it. And if someone doesn't like to divulge what they do for charity, I am respectful of that. I just don't think it's ill mannered or in poor taste to talk about it if asked. You're right about kindness not costing anything. :-6
I like this thread because I am already learning stuff about people I never would have guessed. I like learning about their chosen causes. I don't think less of anyone who chooses to keep theirs private. And so far I don't see anyone bragging, just answering the question.

There are some charities we give to regually that are a deeply personal matter so I don't talk about them but the animal charities I am fine with.

I donate to charities when I can afford it and if it's in a cause I believe in.
I used to sponsor two children but my income went from reasonable to nominal so I had to stop that sadly, still have unpredictable earnings but would like to do that again in the future.
I have in the past supported various charities with regular donations, they have always been ones that have touched me in some way.
I'm one of the nutters that will happily abseil down something for charity, mainly for the buzz of doing it so not entirely selfless!!!
A couple of years ago we had two little girls from Belarus stay with us, that was fun but hard work!

Me too, with the admin stuff. The Rotary Club in Cornwall set up the Shelter Box charity ShelterBox - Disaster Relief and a very small amount goes on admin. Compare that with huge charities that spend the bulk on admin etc.......... doesn't impress me I'm afraid.

Oscar you can get books with a list of charities and the lists have a rundown of what percentage of money goes where within the charity such as admin ,
What was interesting is that the RED CROSS spends a huge pecentage on paid employees. Quite frankly I don't believe they should even be listed as a charity anymore.
