Why did you choose the names for your pets?

Post by Oscar Namechange »

I do love to snoop on other members pic albums and we have many animal lovers here. It would be interesting to know the name of your pets and why you chose their names.

It's pretty obvious why I have 2 dogs called Mulder and Scully but puppy was named after my lovely late mother-in-law.

My Persians were already named as they came from rescue but in the past I have named a cat after Jim Kerr and Mick Jagger.

How about you?

This'll take me a while :wah:

My first cat was called Sam. Do you remember the Sad Sam cuddly toys? well he had such a beautiful sad little face and he just really suited the name. He had very bad epilepsy and died when he was 3 :-1

My next cat was calle Junior. Not because i fancy Arnold Swarwotshisname or anything, it was really just because he was the youngest of the two :p

My first rabbit was called Ash, his fur was the colour of ash. He was the nicest natured animal i have ever owned. He used to lie and lick my forehead for as long as i'd let him. I remember feeling really chuffed thinking this was him being affectionate with me until i read somewhere he was actually just getting salt from my skin lol :o

My next rabbit was called Hazel after one of the rabbits from Watership Down. That film breaks my heart. We had to get her put to sleep when she was only 12 weeks old. She had snuffles and the vets could do nothing for her. I still find it hard to look at her photograph :-1

Next we got Jinx the guinea pig. From the minute we got him he had nothing but bad luck so the name seemed very appropriate.

Then came Fidget + Jake. Fidget never sat still and was always on the move. And Jake well i cant for the life of me remember why we chose that name. Sorry Jake :o

Munch the chinchilla. If it was made of wood he'd eat it. Door, facing, skirting. He seemed to prefer to chew on all of these things instead of the things in his cage that he was allowed to chew on! God i miss him.

Ebony + Ivory the rats. One was all black, and the other all white. Lovely, intelligent little creatures.

Domino the rabbit - he's black and white and it was a toss up between that and Guinness  lol

Jet the rabbit - she was just a little ball of jet black fur.

Pearl the hamster ~ she was a beautiful off white colour and it reminded me of pearls.

Angel the hamster ~ she was just very cute and angelic looking.

Sasha the cat. Her pedigree name is Staynor Firefly. Staynor is Stan + Nora and they were the breeders we got her from. I wanted a beautiful name for a beautiful cat and it just really suits her.

Ben and Jerry the degus - i absolutely love Ben + Jerry's ice cream and thought they were really nice names for them. When we found out they were actually female (after calling them ben + jerry for 4 months lol) we decided Thelma and Louise were really good names. I just hope they dont decide to leap off the top of their cage and kill themselves

I think that's everybody :-3

Siamese Cat: Won Ton-he is a noodle head

Bunnies:

Hamilton-that was his name when I got him, he was a rescue bunny. I call him Hammy.

Baby- always a baby bunny in size, the runt of the litter.

Marvin the love bird-the kids named hiim, like Marvin the Martian in the cartoons. His colors are like that.

The finches-they are nameless, just a momma and pappa.

Molly the red Bassett Hound- was already named when we rescued her.

Katie- blonde cocker spaniel- my mom and dad named her and they just liked the sound of it.

Foxy- chihuahua/terrier mix- owner had named him so because he resembles a little red fox.

Nathaniel Hawthorne (Nathan)- I like my pets to have first and last name usually and he "just looked" like a Nathaniel.

Xena- can climb fences with her teeth and hang upside down, is my escape artist, so named her after Xena the Warrior Princess.

Lizzy-black lab/chow/pit mix- my other escape artist. Named by my mom.

Wickett- tortoiseshell cat- adopted her and all-black brother Sprockett, wanted witchy sounding names for them.

Sunday (Sunny)- Siamese tabby mix- adopted on Sunday, Mother's Day as gift for my mom, We call him Sunny and variations of.

Silk-Silk (Silky)- Himalayan cat. Named for her adundant, soft fur.

I had a cat that was RSPCA rescue. He came to me at the age of approx 7 years old with a shattered jaw after thugs used him as a football. The RSPCA called him 'Sooty' but I had to change his name to 'Sinny' after Britain became politically correct. He lived to 22 years old and I still miss him.

I have a orange/white long-haired named Kallee. I got her from the humane society 10 yrs ago and my dad thought she was a calico, so he was like name her callie and of course I switched up the spelling, only after explaining she wasn't calico to my unknowing father :wah:

Past pets...

Duke, yellow lab, I named him Dude cuz he was so goofy and acted stoned all the time. My dad hated it and when I left him with them because my apartments wouldn't allow large dogs, he renamed him Duke.

River, white pit, we got her one afternoon after returning from the river. Very creative, I know.

Ami, brindle pit, named her after my favorite tattoo artist.. Ami James.

Bayla, pit/lab mix, got that name off of 'Divine Secrets of Yaya Sisterhood'

Volley, jack russell mix, I have no clue where I came up with the name

Daisy & Ben, beagles, they just looked like a daisy and a ben.

Sugar baby, rat terrier, no clue lol ( i was 7 and probably craving sugar )

Harley, siberian husky, she was a tough biatch and needed a tough name. My dad let her go at like 4 in the morning tho because you wouldn't quit howling :((

I could probably continue racking my brain for more but that's enough :)

That's easy......so they will come to you when you call them. It aligns with putting their name on their feed bowl so they know which one is there’s or for those pets that are 'reading impaired', you get the bowls that have "Dog" or "Cat" on them.

Of course you have to teach them to know and understand those words. It's easier I found if you just use that old classic "See Spot Run".
