Baby Locked Alone in Day Care
JOHNSTON, R.I. -- A 9-month-old baby was left alone at a locked Rhode Island day care center for nearly an hour when workers shut the place down for the night, apparently forgetting the child was there.
The baby's mother, Julia Castillo, said she came to pick up her son Monday at the My Special Place Early Learning Center in Johnston, only to find the center locked and no one around. A neighbor heard her yelling and banging on the door and helped her get inside, where she found her baby boy crying in a crib.
The day care owner, Jessica Faiola, said the child's mother did not sign the baby in when she dropped him off. She called it a "crazy mistake" and doesn't want to point fingers.
Kevin Savage, of the state Department of Children, Youth and Families, said the center has been put on probation.

oh. my. god.
If that had been my son... that newspaper reporting would be followed by mother, in a "crime of passion" (?) seriously injures daycare owner.

I'd be freaking out:mad: thankfully, a friend of mine watched my daughter for almost 4 yrs...never a problem

It's definitely crazy. I don't care what excuse is given...
My parents will more than likely be watching my munchkin while I work and finish school.

I just don't get it. Even if the mother forgot to sign him in, how could they not notice a baby there?

My sentiments exactly. Did his diaper not need changing throughout the day? Was he not fed? Hello!

I agree with AF, didn't they change his diaper, etc. Kinda hard to ignore a 9 month old baby...there is no excuse for this stupidity. The daycare owner was negligent & should be held accountable

Very very easily. Makes me mad sometimes. Here's what happened at ours .
Mother insists that baby be fed before she picks him up because then he sleeps on the way home....well actually he doesn't because he falls asleep straight after the bottle and when she arrives she always wakes him up and then he cries all the way home .......Apparently that's our fault.
she doesn't sign him in one day turns up late hands the baby over to ...not the mothercraft nurse like she is supposed to (Because the mothercraft nurse would hold her up making her sign in and checking hte baby over for bruises nappy etc. ) nope she hands the baby over to an assistant not even allocated to the baby room.
so's anyway !!! communication breakdown .....Assistant hands baby over to young assistant in the baby room. Mothercraft nurse had to leave urgently is not told about the baby.( why? Because the baby was crying and the young assistant walked him up and down the hallway for a bit to quieten him .........she has no knowledge that he hasn't been signed in.)
Alls okay, baby is taken care of all day, Gets his last feed for hte day and promptly as always goes to sleep . Young assistant turns the lights down, gets ready to end her shift.....Tells assistant in other room "all's quiet" Assistant sees the lights out in the babys room and takes that to mean the room is shut down for the night. Assistant from baby room assumes other assistant knows baby is there Because obviously he's signed in ...is he not? Nope!
Assistant in other room gets rid of the last two children in her care and begins closing the rest of the centre down. Alls well with the register....... she signs it ......Day is done. Locks the door half an hour after closing time mind you.
Begins to get into her car and the mother of the baby turns up.
Whos at fault?

Did people make it a habit of picking their children up late? Yikes! Now I understand the need to sign the child in.

thats a tossup megs...the mom who didn't sign the baby in & the daycare workers who didn't bother to look into the darkened room...but like AF said, didn't they change his diapers/feed him, etc.? Peeps are in too much of a hurry in the morning, can't be bothered to sign in as they are probs late for work...takes 2 secs to write your name in the register.:-5

Oh peg if you only knew . This woman used to leave her baby with relatives but they stopped looking after him .....wonder why?
I'm a believer of family looking after family but a lot of the time family won't do it because of the perfect demands placed on them from supposedly perfect parents who want their lives to be perfect..........child centres along with people who work in them aren't perfect. but people think they should be . Well if things were perfect you wouldn't need child care centres!!!!!! And you'd be the perfect parent and look after your own baby!!!!

Like my mum says "You leave them here, they do as their bloody told, don't like it? go somewhere else." which is fair enough my mum has spent a lot of dollars putting toys and such in her home and she probably saves my nieces hundreds of dollars a week.
See that's just it Ducky the child was taken care of all day very well.......He was one of the favourites.......we called him ..."squiggy" . Gorgeous child.
and that's another thing if you want your child to be taken care of perfectly then you have to understand that child care workers do have their favourites. mothers get really upset when they see everyone else doesnt' think their child is 'all that'. God I could tell you come stories. We had one little girl who was extremely spoiled at home, one day she decided to smile sweetly at us and draw a line around the wall of the toddler room. she thought it was the funniest thing she'd ever done. my partner told her that wasn't very nice and and how she would have to clean it all now. then showed her outside to play. the girl kicked up a absolute riot. When being picked up her grandfather and mother asked how she'd been today and we told them "well we had a bit of trouble and showed them the walls. they were horrified we didn't think it was funny and promptly reported us . I think they thought we were slaves or something to spit upon going by their nationality.
but get this ........the little girl had a cousin in the same room , totally different child awfully sweet. But when grand father picked them both up the first girl would get all the accolades and hugs and kisses and the cousin wouldn't even be spoken to. ...................so obviously we gave more attention to the cousin during the day.

Our mothercraft nurse was very thougher, she would ask a mountain of questions and the mother just couldn't be bothered. Plus I knew these girls and they loved the kids. Especially squiggy they themselves were horrified of the stuff up . It was just the misunderstanding of "Alls quiet". You're not supposed to turn the lights down at night for this reason but the assistant felt soory for the boy and wanted him to ahve a peaceful rest. Her problem? she was caring.

I know they love the kids, there was obs a miscommunication in that case...although the mother should have paid attention & signed the paper...2 sec out her busy schedule and all that crap could have been avoided.
