The forthcoming US boycott

As the release of Abdel Basset Ali Al-Meghrah seems to have upset some Americans to the extent that they are calling for a boycott on Scottish goods. I am forced to ask how long the US thinks it can exist without access to real whisky.

Thoughts please.

That a reciprocal boycott of US goods would be in order. The opportunity's too good to miss.

If this boycott goes ahead we should withdraw all our troops from Afghanistan straight away. Why should we be allies to a nation that is so petty and vindictive they would try and destroy the economy of an ally just because they showed a bit of moral integrity and wouldn't kow tow? The bulk of our trade is with the EU anyway.

And why do you always paint us with a broad brush? Just because a group of people want to boycott Scotland, does that mean that we all want to boycott Scotland? That's the silliest thing I've ever heard! You always have people boycotting something. That's the nature of the beast.

I don't know of anyone in my community who has spoken one harsh word against your country....never have...never will. In fact, members of my family are coming to Scotland next summer with lots of their friends.

That Irn-Bru is good stuff! I brought back a can of it from Glasgow, along with my bottle of Viking beer from Norway. Think I'll put it in my safety deposit box just in case THEY try to confiscate it.

You're very quick to assume that I am using a broad brush. Take what I say ion the context of the thread. I don't think most americans are that daft but clearly some of you are. There appear to be already several websites calling for a boycott of Scottish goods, from the response to call for a boycott of french goods clearly the potential is there. such a boycott if it went ahead would cause a lot of anger. bear in mind there are Scottish troops coming back in body bags on a regular basis. How this actually being reported in the American media I don't know.

It says a lot that they think they can browbeat people in to doing what they want. Seriously though, what kind of coverage is this getting in the US?

From previous posts it's obvious that some do not bother reading the text of version of what the minister said and his reasons for the release. I thought listening might be simpler since if you are going to talk about an issue at least take time to listen to the man responsible. Many of your senators and commentators that are criticising the decision find it inexplicable. The reasons are quite clear that they find release on compassionate grounds inexplicable is surprising as i would have thought anyone purporting to be christian would have understood that part of the reason implicitly. Release on compassionate grounds is a feature if scots law and also english come to that. In that context release to die at home is not unusual. To hear americans talk about it being against the rule of law does suggest that the concept of another country having different laws is something they have trouble with.

It is also quite clear that they do not understand british politics as the decision had nothing whatsoever to do with the westminster government- any suggestion that the SNP would be persuaded by influence from Westminster is laughable to anyone that knows scottish politics-they are more likely to go against it just to annoy them. Our constitution is at a crossroads, the next election could will determine if Scotland goes for independence or not. We have ll the oil, labour need scots labour MP's to stay in power and they are shitting themselves about the SNP and using this as an excuse to try and knock out the SNP. Gordon Brown is keeping out of it for that reason since any comment from himisn't likely to help. If there is a vote of no confidence and the SNP please then it will mean an election.

Nope. It is (unfortunately) an alcoholic "beverage" produced by the monks of Buckfast Abbey in Devon. It's particularly popular young drinkers as it is, apparently, very sweet....

I think this is a very important point.

Many Americans search ancestry sites in the hope of being affiliated to any clan in Scotland at any point in history and i have no doubt this will continue.

I don't see things changing much, whats happening at present will blow over.

Bristol City Council links to my local council's rationale for adopting Open Office in preference to Microsoft Office, it's an interesting read. They went ahead, the whole council's running Open Office now on more than 5000 computers. It's not a boycott, it's a relief. It's like permanently getting rid of indigestion. Windows 7 has the same effect, it's a major slickening. The new Microsoft Office on the other hand has completely lost the plot, scrapping pull-down menu access.
