That sounds fairly unlikely to me.

Maybe someone else might be able to advise us. I'd have thought waqf was closer to what you're looking for.

Maybe I spelt it wrong. I will ask Murmat tomorrow to spell it for me. I have picked up a great deal of Turkish over the years but could not write it down.

I did spell it correctly. I found this on the net.

يعني also means 'means'

it's derived from the root عنى which means 'to mean'.

you can use it to say something like "I meant to do that" or "what does it mean".

you can also say "لا يعنيك" which means "it doesn't concern you."

And the pronunciation? Would you like to transliterate those squiggles so we can all pronounce them?

Well good lord, you produced those as confirmation of YANNI - some sort of pronunciation guide seems called for!

You know that he lives very close to me. I swear I could hear the tutting coming down the wire and I could see the eyebrow slowly rising over the rooftops like a sinister sunrise on a cold frosty dawn.

He's tried but eventually they banned him from the zoo for upsetting them. It got so bad that the big man Jock, would scream and charge, beating his chest with his fists. He also upset the Prarie dogs as well when he accussed them of being in favour of the Bush foriegn policy.

Hush, wretch. The board's frozen in horror watching Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas facing down Johnny Ringo and the Clantons and you're blithely wandering around Fremont Street trying to set up a plate camera complete with tripod to make the next day's Tombstone Epitaph. Get under cover fast.

That's such a relief, I'd thought we were discussing the Arabic.

eta: I apologize, I've just re-read the thread, it was merely an assumption on my part based on "a general Middle Eastern expression".
