Poles won't have an american base in Redzikowo :wah: Isn't that great? :guitarist I knew from the beginning that Obama would be a great president and would repair what G.W. Bush and his conservative friends had spoilt.

Stupid Poles wanted american help to become stronger than Russia and now they have to face it - there is no more important partnership in the world than the partnership joining two genuine superpowers - the United States and former Soviet Union.

It's rather a healthy moment in world history Lenn, I'm glad you're pleased.

Did you notice Nato chief reaches out to Russia as well?

"In the medium and long term, the new [NATO] secretary general wants to reinvigorate the Nato-Russia council and carry out a joint review of the strategic security challenges. In the short term, he wants to deepen co-operation in a wide range of areas. Perhaps most eye-catching was the prospect Mr Rasmussen raised of the US, Nato and Russia working together on missile defence. "

BBC NEWS | Americas | Polish hopes shot down by US move

"For Polish supporters of the Bush administration's missile defence system it was a disappointing day. For the Polish government and particularly the country's president, Lech Kaczynski, the deal signed in August last year was important because it would have strengthened the country's security by binding Poland and the US closer together. "

It's a bit like saying you know you have True Religion because God speaks directly into your heart. As a way of life it's fine, as a basis for discussion it's a bit one-sided and pointless.

Do you think they ask the entire population? Of course not... they ask a cross section or the politicians who THINK they know what the people want.

You see, I have been living in Poland for three years now. Working as a journalist, I spend most of my time reading polish newspapers and watching local television. I don't deny that there are some intelligent Poles who are against the missile shield, but that's certainly a minority. Generally, they are (as a nation) very, very disappointed. President Kaczynski has announced it a "black day for the whole country" and emphasised that Americans were not very tactful announcing their decision on September 17th when Poland traditionally celebrates the 70th anniversary of soviet invasion (yes, they call it invasion!).

I think that Obama and Kennedy have a lot in common. Obama has a chance of becoming equally popular - not only in the US - among other things because of his positive attitude towards Russia.

The trouble with "I'm going by the average Pole who lives there" is that they're unnamed, it's an uncheckable claim and I doubt your credentials as an accurate interpreter or reporter of events. I place reasonable faith in the professional correspondents at the BBC because they name their sources, accurately quote their words and allow their readers to place an appropriate value on each voice quoted.Aleksander Szczyglo, head of the National Security Council and friend of the president, called it a "historic mistake" on the part of the Americans, which demonstrated a failure of their long-term thinking about Central and Eastern Europe.

[...] For Bartosz Weglarczyk, foreign editor of the leading Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza, a supporter of the base, that is a much worse solution. "Poland wanted a permanent US military installation in this part of Europe because it would mean the real end of the iron curtain," he told the BBC. "We are second class members of Nato. Nato doesn't even have contingency plans for this part of Europe. Having a US military base in Poland would have changed this."

[...] The main opposition party Law and Justice accused the government of not doing enough to convince Washington of its support and worth. One of its MPs, Karol Karski, said the government should resign. "Polish-US relations have been re-orientated. The Donald Tusk cabinet proved unable to convince the US to treat Poland as one of its more important European allies," he added.

Contrasting that with "I'm going by the average Pole who lives there" as a basis for validating the OP is for each reader of the thread to do individually. It's why adding the occasional real-world fact might bolster your argument.

There you are then. A balanced article in a respectable journal of record.

And "as of August, 58% of Poles were in favor of the plan, according to the daily Rzeczpospolita".

"The Polish people I know were totally gainst the US missile shield" may well be accurate but it's scarcely an authoritative account of Polish opinion in general, even you must recognize that.

Exactly and why it contradicts the OP of 'The stupid poles wanted it'. Obviousley, 42% did not, that is if the polls are accurate.
