Who keeps a diary these days?

Post by Raven »

I have to confess (my husband already knows), I read his diaries. They were from when he was MUCH younger, but going through his first romances, divorce, and a real stressful time in his life. What came through in the day to day ramblings of a 20 something, who enjoyed a spliff or two, was the lonliness and ache of someone who just wanted to be loved for who they were.

The point is this, after having read them, I felt as though I understood him so much more. He showed me a bit of his 20 year old self like I was there with him.

Is this what people see when they read our diaries? (I started keeping one again.) Will my great grandchildren know me through them?

How much less would we have known if people like Anne Frank and Samuel Pepys not wrote one?:-3

Yeah, who knows what we are party to! I keep one to just make sense of it all, later on. In case of alzheimers or something. At least I have the good stuff on paper!

I used to keep a diary when I was a teenager.

Now I keep a book of random thoughts.

I don't write in it every day but I carry it with me.

:)

I do have a complete journal of my most recent holiday mind you.

That was more like a travel log mind you but still hand written account of 16 days of my life hehehehe

aw thanks PC. I suspect my oldest daughter will be wanting to read that one shortly.

I remember my mom years ago getting a audio cassett, it was of my great grandmother reciting her life story, my mom typed that entire manuscript out and made many copies for many family members, it was so cool.

My great grandma was an American Pioneer, my great Grandfather was an Irish immigrant who worked on an Alberta Ranch. He and his crew did work across the border and that is where he met my Great Grandma. The real cool thing is the ranch is still operational to date and runs tours and is a historical site. My GGpa is on the work logs cool eh I have walked over his footsteps :)

Who keeps a diary these days?

Post by along-for-the-ride »

On my 11th birthday, I was gifted with a small plastic heart-shaped diary. Each day had only 4 or 5 short lines to fill. Well, I filled them. With observations, nonsense, glimpse of events of the day....mine and the worlds. For example, I noted when President Kennedys infant son Patrick died and how sad I was about it. Then I entered into my teen years and still had some pages to fill. Silly really. Boyfriends, girlfriends, siblings, parents, school, etc. Nothing profound.

I still have this diary and it is amusing to read now............in hindsight. The things I thought so terribly important at the time seem so trivial now. But....truth be told, I cherish that little plastic heart-shaped diary. It was me....long ago.

What a lovely thread. I love the idea of a book of Random Thoughts, pinkchick and Minks. I have started a diary so many times but it's never lasted for longer than a few days. Maybe I could collect random thoughts instead. Thanks for the idea. :-4:-4

What a lovely memory book for you too AFTR. :-4

How interesting that such a small gift has brought you so much joy.

yep it can get a little frightening at times when I read back at some of my randomness ahahaha I am certain decades from now my girls will take a read and look at each other and nod their heads and say "yep i knew mom was nuttier than a fruitcake" ahahahaha

Ok they thought the same of Da Vinci right ok I feel better.

hahahaha

Actually something I have instilled upon my girls for years is if your having troubles with anything or anyone, write it in a book. Rewrite it and write it again, then if you think you have to deliver the speach to anyone do so, if after a day or so the matter has disolved rip out the pages and throw them away. I do it often. I do have what I call my Therapy book hehehehehe
