Killing flies

Post by AussiePam »

The red dust cloud from inland Australia brought with it an added gift - flies, blowflies, blowies.

Even so, you'd think a third floor apartment would be spared but no. We got them. And we're still getting them. Being human, I'm a natural born killer but I did manage to sensitively escort many little visitors off the premises, life intact. The recalcitrant I wasted with a rolled up newspaper, as my household fly swatter seems to have vanished in our transfer to Sydney from the country. Which brings me to the point of this thread.

Can I buy a fly swatter anywhere in Sydney???? NO!!! Supermarkets looked blank. Corner shops shook their heads. Even seaside dollar shops thought I was nuts.

Then today, finally - BINGO - at a household items specialist shop, I apparently struck gold, pink gold. The woman said it was a kind of posh fly swatter, and even had 'diamonds' in the handle.

Exhibit A is what I wanted.

EXhibit B is what I was offered.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:wah: Oh dear, a pink cushioned fly swatter, that is handy.

Did someone manage to pull the wool over retailer's eyes and convince her that's for flies, certainly looks like a swatter but not sure it's designed for flies :yh_rotfl

I can see the novelty for carrying in your handbag though Pam, be handy for swatting away unwanted attention in the fly area :D

Spoken like a true Londoner, Carolly - but - and my mind is boggling a bit here - are you speaking of Exhibit A or Exhibit B????

Betty - I had never thought of that. But yes, I shall now consider adding a pink heart shaped diamond handled fly swatter to the mace in the designer French perfume bottle and the pearl handled pistol in my handbag.

WOW, Carolly!! I am viewing you in a new light!!! Or maybe a new dark.... :sneaky: (Mad, bad and dangerous to know, know wha! I mean)

(Personally I've always thought a rolling pin useful for that kind of multitasking! Though, to be honest, I've never actually tried to kill a fly with a rollingpin.

Sort of a bit like baseball, only with the odds in my favour!!)

I've never actually tried to kill a fly with a rollingpin.

Apartment Cricket: Take guard at the crease (in the carpet) and try to swat the little blighters in flight. Score 4 for each time one hits a wall and you're out if you hit yourself.

Great way to stay fit (if a bit bruised) in a small space.

Ah yes cricket, Clodders!! The Headmistress of my old school had once been Captain of the English Wimmins Crickit Team, doncha know - and so we gells got good at bowling googlies and have been known to wield a mean bat too.

But never in anger and one does not assault Him Indoors. Ever. It would not be sporting.

On the other hand, Carolly - flyswatting other assorted men could be very sporting, a profitable sideline. In my dominatrix mode, I'll hafta consider it. Do your fly swatters come in black leather, and studded ???- I like to be sartorially co-ordinated!

(Mental picture of diminuitive leatherclad AussiePam wielding large bloke overhead with one hand as flyswatter... :wah:)

Watch out for Claire Taylor. If you get the chance to see her bat, take it. Real class.

Taylor crowned ICC player of the year - England Women and International - Women's - News - ECB

Killing flies

Post by hoppy »

My dad fought some terrible battles with flies that somehow invaded the inside of his house. One day I stopped by after work. As I entered, mom cautioned me not to say anything about the strange spots on the wall. Later, when dad was out, mom told me what happened.

Dad had been fighting flies in the house all day. They made him nuts. That evening, one particular flie kept buzzing around dad's chair as he tried to watch TV. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't kill that flie. Mom went to bed, leaving dad to do battle with the kamakaze flie.

Shortly after retiring, she heard a loud 'POP'. Jumping out of bed, she ran to the living room. There sat dad, looking at the wall and holding his .22 revolver. She looked at the wall, seeing a pattern of tiny holes and gouges.

Turns out, dad got so irritated with that fly, he loaded a .22 birdshot cartridge in his revolver. When the fly landed on the wall nearby, dad simply executed it. Later dad patched the wall and repainted it. Eventually the rest of the family learned of his escapade and dad had to endure a great deal of ribbing.

We have a strict 'No Kill' policy in our house. We kill nothing. We don't get a lot of flies but they get trapped in my super dooper catcher and released. We seem to be awash with spiders at the moment and daddy long legs.

My brilliant fly catcher.

I hadn't thought of actually using a shotgun.......

Though we did think of using my trusty longbow to sort the Indian mynah* birds nesting about four feet from the balcony of my daughter's new flat. Not only was their continual screeching driving her bonkers, but they divebombed her every time she went outside.

When all gentler methods of dissuasion failed, my daughter enlisted her brother's help and they shook the tree, a tall bottlebrush. The birds didn't like that But the nest remained firm on its foundations. However next morning my daughter noticed a different kind of activity going on. The mynah pair were carefully dismantellling the nest, piece by piece obviously with the intent of moving it elsewhere. Why waste a good construction. By evening demolition was complete, and the birds and nest were totally gone. A guilt free result.

ALOHA!!

MOTTO TO LIVE BY:

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming.

WOO HOO!!, what a ride!!!"
