Super Puppy Alarm System

So I learned a lot about my 6 month old puppy last night...she is a Chow/American Eskimo mix. I always keep my front door open and that way I can see kids coming up to the house thru my screen door for trick or treating. Everytime my puppy Sophie saw someone in a mask, or had face paint on, she would charge at the door while barking and snarling. I think she's gonna make a great watch dog.

My other two didn't really mind. My big boy Cody stole the show as always...I always hear, "look at that dog" "I've never seen a dog that big" "what kind is he" "he's so cute" ...it's always the same just because of his sheer size. They have no idea how he and my other Chow would rip someone apart if they messed with their momma. :-4

Does anyone else have super puppy/dog alarms that scare the hell outta anyone coming to your door?

She'll grow into it...at 6 months, her bark and growl aren't to vicious yet, but she's getting there. :wah:

It is no bad thing to have one good guard dog Shell, and they usually show the trait early on in life. You can train a pup to be a guard dog but It's far better if the Instinsct is natural.

One of my brothers works for West Sussex Police as a Police Dog carer. he doesn't train them but we take the mick out of him by calling him a 'Kennel Maid' and he reminds us he is a 'Police Dog Carer' :wah: I love to hear how the police select them as Pups and train them.

As you know, my Mulder is a natural. We have to have Beware of the dog signs all over the gate and the door. The mailbox is on the outside fence so the paper-boy and postie don't have to come up the path and there is also a digital doorbell outside the gate. he has never been trained to attack but is extremely territorial. Yet when the kids come out of school, he is at the gate waiting for his fuss from them.

Sophie loves people once we let them in the house, but she doesn't like it when strangers are outside...she's definitely going to be a natural. Chows were bred to be guard dogs, and my big boy (Great Pyrenees) was bred to be a flock protector, even fighting off bears if they threatened their flocks. So I have no doubt that all 3 of my babies would try their hardest to stop a stranger from coming into my house. None of them like anyone unless I let them in...then they're like best friends. :-4:wah:

a seat for two or more persons, having a back and usually arms, and often upholstered.

It's from old english-a settle was a bench with back and arms.

Also sometimes called a sofa which is arabic or persian I think. Usually a sofa refers to a seat that has legs you can see that can be made in to a bed as well-but we also talk about bed settees. It's funny how you use words without thinking about them most UK'rs would know the difference without really thinking about it

Our words and phrases are spoken so much differently compared to the UK.

A couch is something different again-that's a long upholstered seat with a headrest at one end-like a psychiatrist uses also called a chaise longue. and I thought it was just the funny accent north American tourists had difficulty with:-3

puppy alarm, I need one!

I even thought of buying an alarm that barks real dogs.

Now here it's called a chaise, what you described. A couch is altogether different. It's long with usually 3 cushions and an arm rest on each end.

I can just tape Cody's bark and make it play in a loop...he has a very big, deep bark. Of course Lacey's sounds much more vicious.

I would be a riot watching the cats go nuts everytime the barking alarm went off!!! :yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl

:o sorry-but is it so wrong to take time out to expand the vocabulary of a canadian? It might one day help her win a general knowledge quiz about furniture.

Our previous dog as a large standard poodle-thirty one inches at the shoulder that looked absolutely terrifying when barking-especially with the winter coat and was incredibly aggressive as a guard dog. People just didn't come near our door when he was out. When you walked down a street people parted to let you pass. We go winter hillwalking-people used to keep taking his picture because they couldn't believe it was a poodle he was so big. Being a pedigree the jaws were very weak so in reality all he could do was knock someone over since his bite was ineffectual.

Currently we have a collie/dalmation cross about 24 inches that looks really cute and not frightening at all. He barks in warning but is friendly rather than aggressive to people. But of the two he is the one you wouldn't want biting you he could quite literally bite your hand off. I don't actually know what he would do if someone broke in or if my wife or I were attacked if we were out. having had him from a pup he very much defers to us and watches our reactions to situations. He's friendly to other dogs but not backward in fighting when he needs to. Like your chow I think-and like people as well perhaps-it's not the noisy overtly aggressive ones that are actually dangerous.

Wow! That was a HUGE Poodle!! I bet your Collie/Dalmation must be gorgeous...I've never seen that combination before. Got any pics you can share?

I know my Chow would attack if needed, she's shown that tendency when she has felt we were in some kind of danger....real or not. Another cool thing about Chows is that they have a bad reputation and people are terrified of them...and they have an extremely strong jaw. My pup looks more Chow than Eskimo, and after the way she behaved on Halloween, I have no doubt she is going to make a good watch dog. My 145lb Great Pyrenees is truly a gentle giant, and is very laid back and loves anyone. The only time I hafta tell people to stay away from him is when he's snuggling with me...he does not like that. But like you said with your Poodle, it's his sheer size alone, and that extremely big bark that scares people but he is always the center of attention.

PS...do you really think trying to expand the vocabulary to a canadian is going to work? :yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl
