In a friendly, jokey type, off the record Convo with a senior police Officer very recently, he called me 'Sweetheart'. I joked that what he had said was Illegal. He said 'OMG, Your right' !!!!

Is this so?

I have been trying to find out for sure but drawn a blank on google.

Then most of us are "illegal" pretty much every day. I know some people find those sort of phrases inappropriate but we all use them for the best intentions and dont intend to patronise

Maybe not etiquette, but its certainly not illegal.

Well that's me, and every other male in the Midlands, knackered then! I can't actually speak to a lady without saying..Sweetheart, darlin', lovey or bab...:wah:

I have just been told that Police Officers are not allowed to use such terms. Not strictly Illegal but one could complain to the IPCC and demand an apology should they be Pedantic enough.
