Is everybody taking full advantage of the latest technology to have the best possible picture at home?

My basic setup is a slim 55" Samsung 1080p HDTV connected via a gold-plated HDMI cable to a Sony Blue-Ray Player with an HQV processing chip with 24fps capability. The picture is nearly flawless!

For some reason, the BD players do not come with HDMI cables, just the standard av cables, but, to me, that kinda' defeats the entire purpose of getting a blue-ray player in the first place. The HDMI cable is an absolute must in order to get the best possible picture.

Feel free to use this thread as a place to ask any technical questions you may have concerning blue-ray players and home theatre setups. I'm certain that we're all still learning about this new technology (I'm still learning, too) and we can help each other out. Not all HDTVs and BDPs are the same. I believe that it's important that all consumers know exactly what they're getting before they make a purchase.

If you don't have a BD player and HDTV... it's 2009 people, where have you been?! :wah:

Im not bowled over with Blu Ray. Actually it really depends on what Im watching. Planet Earth in Blu Ray is nothing short of spectacular. The average film in BR is un-remarkable. I do enjoy audio in DTS and Ill even rent movies strictly for the audio because its a rush to jump when you get crisp effects raining down on you. Im plasma 1080i but I cant find a discernable visual difference between i and p. I have yet to see what the new LED tvs are about, stunning Im sure. Animation is always good in BR but its damned good on DVD as well.

Jury cant condemn BR but its got some questions.

Some movies show off the new technology better than others, Planet Earth being no exception... Star Trek was also rather impressive. Blu-Ray is only going to get better and better, too... and until the technology is available to use a laser with an even shorter wavelength than the so-called "blue" laser, you're stuck with blu-ray as being the best there is. :wah:

There is still a big difference between various HDTVs and Blu-Ray players, too. A 720p resolution HDTV obviously can't compete with a 1080 by 1920 resolution tv and the low end BD players still can't compete with the better blu-ray players that will set you back $300 or more.

I own a 47inch Vizio LCD 1080p television and a blue-ray player made by Samsung. Funny thing is that not long after getting all this stuff I canceled my television service and netflix because I just can't see paying the kind of money charged monthly for those services. Most movies suck and the better commercial free channels such as HBO or Showtime have programming that is so redundant that its boring.

So I use my 47 inch television as my computer monitor so I can sit in my easy chair while enjoying my online activities. I do get the internet in 1080p and if I wanted to watch anything there are always torrents or online sources available. Oh yea I use HDMI and optical audio.

I use my HDTV as a monitor in my bedroom, too!

I also have satellite tv and for the most part, it's crap, you're right. I still like to watch CNN and regular tv shows when I can like; Numb3rs, Criminal Minds, CSI, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles... all those great crime shows. :p I mostly have only ever used my tv for watching movies, however.

Oooh my telly must be around 32inches, it's big, bulky and takes half an hour to warm up

It's not the most important piece of equipment in this house. I can't see me paying out for a flat screen tv along with a blue ray wotsit any time soon to be honest. :wah:

It's still available on Amazon for $39.99! Free shipping... even on orders less than $25 until the 25th. I just ordered some more BDs and yet another Blu-Ray player and I added the Alaska movie that used to be played on Imax theatres... that one was only $7.99.
