Those damned begots. Don't read that part. Actually the Hebrews had a thing about their ancestry. They related to those who had gone before in a big way and so the list of ancestors was important whether actual or invented. It placed them withing history.

As for the length of life back then. The average age at death in the middle east in Biblical times was about 35. Some, who were blessed with good health managed to live to their 80-90 etc. The long ages mentioned in the Bible had symbolic meaning but were not a reality. The higher the number the more importance given to the individual. Over half the children died in the first year or two.
