Right, gang. This is a how-to thread.
I don't know the answer, all I'm doing is posing the question.
How, as a publicity stunt, would one go about turning the Statue of Liberty to face inland?
It has to be done in one night, between sunset and sunrise, without anyone noticing until it's finished. Nothing is to be left damaged in any way.

At first I thought Liberty Island was man made, but that turns out to no be the case as I've been learning about it, which I suspect may be the actual reason for Spot's inquiry. I think he enjoys teaching.
I suppose it's possible that there may be some sort of mechanical structure underlying the statue itself which could allow for directional manipulation in a lifting and turning manner.
Other than using graphic design or computer animation of some sort, I'm presently stumped.

Lifting from above, it strikes me, is guaranteed to cause too much damage. I think you're right about introducing some form of turntable underneath. I'm wondering at the moment how far underneath, and how much of Liberty Island has to turn at the same time.

The holographic principle is a property of quantum gravity and string theories which states that the description of a volume of space can be thought of as encoded on a boundary to the region — preferably a light-like boundary like a gravitational horizon. First proposed by Gerard 't Hooft, it was given a precise string-theory interpretation by Leonard Susskind.
In a larger and more speculative sense, the theory suggests that the entire universe can be seen as a two-dimensional information structure "painted" on the cosmological horizon, such that the three dimensions we observe are only an effective description at macroscopic scales and at low energies. Cosmological holography has not been made mathematically precise, partly because the cosmological horizon has a finite area and grows with time.
The holographic principle was inspired by black hole thermodynamics, which implies that the maximal entropy in any region scales with the radius squared, and not cubed as might be expected. In the case of a black hole, the insight was that the description of all the objects which have fallen in can be entirely contained in surface fluctuations of the event horizon. The holographic principle resolves the black hole information paradox within the framework of string theory.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_principle
This says quite clearly there is no such word as "turning"!

It's actually a theory I've had for quite some time! I think I'll indulge me interests!
I personally have pondered the idea that everything in existence is two dimensional and it all has to do with one's own personal observations. For instance we as intelligent life forms can only view "anything" as being two dimensional and it's only when we observe said "anything" from differing angles that we can only then make an educated guess as to whether or not the object in question is 3 dimensional...
It makes sense...
It's utterly impossible to view something in 3 dimensions. All we can do is assume "anything" is 3 dimensional based off of what our senses allow us to then interpret...Quite frankly, we've invented 3 dimensions...
How does one go about convincing themselves that what they see is the same as what they feel? This question gives rise to the conclusion that in order to ask it we must cease to separate any differences one might perceive sight, smell, touch etc is compared to one and the other...Quite frankly seeing is feeling in the same way feeling is seeing...It's entirely how one sees red and understands "hot" or how one sees bright orange and understands "loud"...
Quintessentially if you were to look at your computer screen you would think you'd see a 3 dimensional object but you wouldn't have understood that concept unless you touched it...
Thus, everything is 2 dimensional while all whom abide by the law of 3 dimensions permits themselves to deceive their own personal interpretations...
This means that "anything" is left up to personal interpretation hence there forth giving complete relevancy to "mirrors"...:yh_wink

Take a dice (or technically, a die, but I'm prepared to be colloquial). Hold it ten inches from your nose with the 1 facing you. You can see three sides because your eyes are separated in a third dimension to the distance and plane of the dice itself. That appearance could be a consequence of a non-cubic shape of the dice but if you turn the 1 to the back you still get to see three faces. The only interpretation of those data is a minimum of three dimensions being perceived.
What's certainly true is that the dice might have more than three non-time dimensions and that you're physiologically incapable of detecting any other than width, depth and height.

I was considering the damage to the foundation which would have to twist at the same rate, and interfaces with something rather more solid than air. You'd need to cut down into the surround to the depth of the foundation, in a cylindrical manner, and pour barrels of lubricant into the rather tight gap.
If you consider a microwave turntable, they go up and down as well as round and round - that would ease matters and who knows, the old lady might even enjoy the experience a bit more.

Yes, but if you "turn" the dice the initial side becomes non existent which leaves one looking at a 2 dimensional piece of dice for an equal amount of time it takes them to forget the side they're looking at...
AKA: Until they "die", if you will...

Maybe she could have a tight coiled resonating spring on your central rod, if you'll excuse the expression?

You wouldn't have been able to understand "3-D" had you not felt it and assumed the object you were feeling were "3-D" as defined by what I'm suggesting to you is a deceived interpretation.
If you were unable to intemperate "3-D" you'd see a 2 dimensional object with lines separating the "inland" for some reason that would be unexplained to you

I've decided it would be much more practical and easier rather than to have Liberty turn her back on the rest of the world to remove the torch and her giving the world the finger.
If that doesn't suit then just have a very large sheet with her painted on it and cover her. Of course the torch would be in the opposite hand and her posture would look a bit odd but that would be fitting considering todays conditions anyway.
All the other stuff would cost too much money and we just don't have it to spend. We're much better off giving that money to a few rich folk in the form of tax reductions so they can create some low paying, trivial and worthless jobs for the rest of us peons.
Problem solved! And I fixed the economy to boot! - NEXT!

Why doesn't America just give her back to France and be done with it? What was the question?
I mean is Spottie trying to bamboozle us under the cover of a game into making The Lady inward looking instead of beckoning to the rest of the world to bring their poor and downtrodden and all that jazz.... Is he suggesting that now maybe that the American people should emigrate to France... ??? Merde alors. NON!!!!!
It's all too much for my Christmassed out brain. I'm going to pour a glass of vino and rewatch Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. ....
