I deal with the public so I see a LOT of rude people. I realize now that many people do not realize how rude they really are. I usually shock it up to ignorance and move on. I've been also known to point out their rudeness to make them aware of it.

I just ignore the person or I will smile at them, nod my head and walk away. I don't trust my temper so for me, it's much easier to just do what I do. :)

It is a very interesting question, and I must admit I have some thoughts concerning this topic that I would like to share with you, if you don't mind.

Well, I always feel very uncomfortable when someone acts in a rude way. To be honest, I feel totally helpless then and do not find anything I could do to prevent this deep feeling. Likewise, I would probably do nothing, except for taking an offence and not talking to such a person again.

But, it always makes me ask a question: isn't that true that we all - people who never behave in a rude way and are full of respect towards the others - isn't that true that we are strangely weak while facing a creep? And isn't that true that we are losers, somehow?

What do you think?

Rude carries so many different behaviours. I try to work out which it is that I've just had inflicted on me. Is it bad temper, or provocation, or dislike, or ignorance, or lack of consideration, or something as simple as an oversight? Each gets a different reaction. In general the more rude someone gets the politer I become. The one least likely to be mended is sheer uncomprehending ignorance.

Well, I deal with rude quite frequently, so most of it rolls off my back (that took years to develop). Initially, I get defensive inside my head, saying nothing. Then I switch gears and wonder what sort of day/week/personal issues they may currently be going thru. Walking in their shoes, so to speak.

That being said, I hate when others are condescending to me. My hot button. I am still working on that, takes me longer to get in the right frame of mind.

These are work scenarios.

In person, I let their rudeness spell out their character. I have a SIL who is a miserable human being and is always rude. I used to react, now I just let her behaviour speak for itself.

I do my best to not be rude, but I'm sure we're all guilty of it sometimes, and we probably don't even realize it. Most of the time it's really easy to just let it go...but sometimes something a little smartassed will just pop right out of my mouth. :lips:

if someone is rude for no reason i can usually joke about it and say whooaaa who got out of the bed the wrong side of bed today then and laugh :)

if some one has tried to be nasty online i just laugh to myself and put them on ignore and enjoy the peace :yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl

I travel a lot, and try to be cognizant of other cultural POV, so that I do not give offense.

Being aware of such, I know that what seems rude to me, may be completely within bounds in other cultures, so I tend to be slow to react to people when I perceive rude behavior.

In my observation, most rude behavior is simply thoughtlessness. People are so wrapped up in their own stuff, they don't think about others, and forget simple kindness. It is usually not worth the effort to confront them.

If I see someone behaving in a way that is obviously an attempt to intimidate, or frustrate others, however, I am perfectly equipped to call them on it, and give them pause to reconsider their behavior.

This is a lot like how I am Lars...if it's directed at me I can usually blow it off without a second thought (I said USUALLY). It's when I see it happening to others, especially family, then watch out cuz I'm gonna roll right over them and put them back in their place.

I dont have time for rude people, nor patience. I understand totally if the rudeness is a product of pain or fear of the unknown. In my profession pain is a great instigator of rudeness. But outside of work I usually respond with a good old fashioned "pi$$ off!" Then go on my way without a morsel of regret.
