Making A Difference?

Post by Ahso! »

Do you really need or even want others to make a difference in your life?

Do you really think others want or think you could make a difference in their life?

And what does all of that mean anyway? Sounds like a bunch of baloney to me. But maybe I'm just being cynical?

Others do make a difference in my life, and I like to think I make difference in theirs. Had a friend round for lunch today - he just popped in as I was making Stilton and Broccoli soup.

Bastard! There's none left now. :-5:yh_rotfl

Bastard! There's none left now. :-5:yh_rotfli like your answer to the third question: It means they eat the leftovers.

But seriously, isn't that a visit, and not a difference? It has to take really special visits to qualify as a difference, don't ya think?

Are we overusing the phrase "making a difference?" Perhaps thats where my cynicism is coming from.

Thanks for keeping the thread high on the search page, guy's, but perhaps you can carry on this little love fest of yours on Ian's thread?

I'd appreciate it if you both would delete the irrelevant posts too.

No hard feelings.:)

Off the top of my head...

Others do make a difference in my life. That said I really dont think I need others the same way I used to. I used to need people to validate my worth. Not so much anymore.

I welcome what others can offer in the way of love, insight, perspective and companionship but I feel self reliant enough to be able to provide my own validation these days.

Somewhere along the way I started enjoying myself and dont really find myself in want of much.

If others need me I try to honor their trust.

IMHO, nobody can "make a difference" in my life other than myself. Same theory for others as well. If you look at the definition of the word difference, Difference Definition | Definition of Difference at Dictionary.com. Perhaps it will help people to understand my opinion. People can influence, support, suggest, and offer opinions but it's up to the individual to weigh this information if they truly want to "make a difference" in their own life.

How would you, Ahso, define the words "make a difference?"

Don't need or want others to make a difference in my life. Doesn't mean they haven't, however. Or that they intended to, come to that.

I make a difference in peoples lives that have no idea I even exist. Their wants or thoughts don't even enter into it.
I expressly forbid the use of any of my posts anywhere outside of FG (with the exception of the incredibly witty 'get a room already' )posted recently.

Folks who'd like to copy my intellectual work should expect to pay me for it.:-6

It doesn't really matter if we want or need others to make a difference in our lives because they do make a difference. I met and then married my wife and she has made a profound difference in my life. Years ago I met, became friends with a person who was eventually responsible for me making a major career change which made another change in my life. There are lesser instances but these are the two major differences that come to mind.

As to what others want or think-----------I have no idea.

This thread has made me think of the movie. "It's a Wonderful Life". You know.........the one they play on television every Christmas. ;)

"You've been given a great gift, George: A chance to see what the world would be like without you."

We'll probably never know how we have made a difference on some one elses life. That "diiference" could be a good thing...............or a not so good thing. One of lifes many mysteries.

Absolutely! it's so much better than just a paycheck. I love it when ex-students come up to me in the world and show me their families and tell me about their jobs. often they will make sure to tell me that it was all because of me. There's really nothing like that feeling.

I especially like it when they are the first in their family to graduate high school. Now, when they have children they'll tell them, "I graduated and so will you!" That can save a family line for generations!

Do you really think others want or think you could make a difference in their life?

I don't have to guess, I know. They tell me all the time and I see the effects of my work in reality. I've been teaching now across three decades. I see the results all the time. I just wish I could have got into this field sooner!:-6

Surely, you've made a difference in a life! What about your children?:-3
