yes im afraid it is, specially xmas day. no public transport runs at all here !!!

its not that i cant rely on him, he's a good old boy and will help anyone if he can............... she just dosnt bother asking him, then it looks like its not her fault he dosnt turn up !!!

think i might be better off on me own anyway, who needs this hassle ??

Are they tropical fish? I always think that a tank of fish is so relaxing, and I can watch them for ages. I'm glad to see you don't have artificial greenery in the tank with your fish, I'm sure they prefer it that way as well.

Fish eat the real plants, also, real plants add oxygen to the water which helps the fish breathe, they also have a line of bubbles for breathing as well.

Well the new year has started with proper winter weather ! Snow and ice, sub-zero temperatures, and plenty of motorists trying to cope with driving on very slippery roads, some of them failing miserably ! It isn't surprising that people have these accidents, as they just aren't used to such extreme weather, and the fact that authorities are failing to grit the roads properly. Penny pinching with grit is a false economy, because with the lack of attention to keeping the roads open and ice free has caused tremendous expense for emergency services, not least the NHS in the UK any way. The hospitals have had to postpone scheduled operations in order to cope with the onslaught of accidents, either because of crashes or because of pedestrians skidding over on the icey surfaces and breaking bones.

We live in a hilly area and our house is on a hill, and we over-look a residential road that has a fairly steep gradient. No gritting has been done, and there are no 'grit boxes' at the side of the road for people to D.I.Y. when necessary. This is common on most of the 'side' roads. Makes it very difficult, if not impossible, for people to use their cars to get to work, or to the shops. Schools have had to close, because staff are unable to get there. Most primary schools are in the middle of residential areas, and of course, the roads have not been gritted and the hard packed snow has been sheened by vehicles skidding, then there is a fall of more snow, then that is frozen to ice, and so on. You have very little chance of getting up a road that has a slant to it.

We are OK, as we have plenty of groceries, including food for our dog, we have plenty of gas and electric, and we have filled various containers with water, just in case a water main should burst (as has happened in other places!).

We are nice and warm in our house, and we won't need to venture out for anything (except for walking the dog) for several days ! I ain't sorry about that, as there is more snow forecast, possibly the worst on Sunday. We're up to date with any mail to send out, so all is ticking over quite nicely at 'chez Gill'

I hope all of you are OK too, I expect those of you across the 'pond' are well used to this kind of winter weather, but us folks in UK (except poss. Scotland and Wales) are not so used to such long lasting and heavy snowfalls, and it takes a little while to get organised ! :yh_rotfl

I've just been watching 3 youngsters using a 'wheelie bin' as a sledge. They're pulling it up to the top of a sloping path across grass surrounding the playpark, laying it down on it's side, jumping on top of it and sliding down the slope, which is about 130 metres long. I'm not sure who the wheelie bin belongs to, but it is having a wonderful time with those youngsters ! LOL It should be OK because those bins are pretty tough. They're made of heavy duty plastic of some sort.

They stop every now and again to have a laugh at people trying to get their cars up the sloping road ! :wah:

Thanks Jazzy ! It's snowing again here, just because Hubby cleared our pathway of snow and sprinkled salt, and he cleared the pathway outside our garden as well. Now it's doing it's best to cover the path again grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr It's going to be fun and games in the morning when people try to drive to work from our neighbourhood. It is so hilly, and the gritter only does the main roads.

OMG...................... ten days of fighting to get back on here, these dongle thingys dont work properly in cold weather aparantly !!!!!!

as we have been forcast heavy snow for tomorrow, im gonna jump on here quick and say im ok before it goes again, the only site ive been able to get on, with a hell of a struggle is face book which, in a way, is handy cos at least ive been able to keep in touch with my girls.

it has been bitterly cold here, we had snow on wednesday which turned to sheet ice by thursday and i couldnt get to work, they tell you not to drive in this weather but dont do anything to clear the footpaths so you can walk.

sunday morning we woke up to a thick covering of snow, the dog loved every moment of it but he got ice balls between his toes and it looked like he had platform shoes on lol.

tonite, its all gone again, including the ice, thank god.

facebook is extremely hard now with me as well as its always down.

We're always told to stay home when we have a lot of snow, try telling that to your employer.:rolleyes:

at least your dog is enjoying all the snow.

im not on proper broadband, just have this little thing that plugs into my pc, sorry if im preaching to the converted so to speak, dont know if you have that sort of thing over there :-2

im in a bad reception area too which dosnt help :-5 and i suppose that with folk not being able to get out in this bad weather, they were all on their pc's too lol and over loaded the system !!

Tis blowing a hooly here too, or is it hooley lol we know what we mean. It's raining here, hopefully it won't turn into snow as they are predicting. My car told me it was 4 degrees out there although that doesn't take into account wind chill, and that wind is icy. My daughters primary school is still like an ice rink yet my sons secondary is fine and they're both in the same village, all the snow has gone from on top my hill too, yaayy! Although the hill is still extremely slippery with the amount of grit and salt that's been on it for the past week, hopefully this rain will wash it away.

Hope your dongle continues to work, I swear my broadband plays up in bad weather too and my connection ran very slowly on all the snow days, I guess everyone was sat in in the warm and surfed to pass the time.

just text my boss to see wots happening with work tonite, everything is falling out of the sky now and the wind is even worse than it was this morning, dreading having to take the dog out but he just wont " go " on his lead, has to find an open space first !!!!:-5:-5

good news, only have to go in if it stops :sneaky: fingers crossed it dosnt lol !! im too warm and comfy now !!

talkin of warm, i had my electric bill yesterday :-3:-3 over £200 but ive had two electric heaters on 24/7 since the begining of october and everything else here is electric too and after a bit of calculating it works out about £17 a week.

that cant be too bad, as when i had a key meter in my last place (over 4yrs ago ) i was using about £12 a week then................

the computor kicked back into proper action last nite :rolleyes: so at least i can play my games now

Hi all ! Snow is still lying here, but the main roads are clear. The sky is very heavy with fairly dark thick clouds, I expect that if anything falls from those clouds it may be rain or sleet, as the temp. is just above freezing. The wind, although not quite hooligan standard, is very raw.

Glad everyone is safe, and warm. and I'm pleased that you have connection again Helen. Viva la connection :yh_rotfl

I am soooooo glad we had our central heating done. We also get paid a 'cold weather' payment if the average temp. over 7 days is below freezing point. We have had two such payments so far this winter, and I expect there will be yet another, as the temp. over night is well below freezing and has been for a few weeks ! These payments are made to pensioners and handicapped people etc. and a damn good job too, otherwise a lot of folks would be very hard pressed. As it is they have to decide whether to eat as normal and turn the heating down, or cut down on their food bill and have a bit more heat! We really are turning into a third world country !

I haven't been out of the house for a week now. But I'm not too bothered at the moment, as it is so cold out there, and I'm cosy in my warm little house

Chris went to play snooker last night, and he drew frames with his opponent of the evening, who said his game had improved tremendously over the months! It is good that he can get out and enjoy some 'me' time. I'm happy enough on here

playing games in the arcade or posting controversial posts on FG :yh_rotfl

or just googling on the net. I find that fascinating ! There are so many things to find and enjoy. Also, when I am on my own, I can pick what TV progs I can watch, or even have music on. I watched a Stephen Seagal film last night, all violence, swearing etc. made a change, and I just felt like watching a bit of violence :yh_rotfl I watched 'Wild at Heart' on Sunday, I do enjoy that series - quite different from that Stephen Seagal film :yh_rotfl

its persistantly raining still but according to the news, camelford, about 20 miles from here, is virtually cut off.:-2 bodmin moor and dartmoor havnt faired much better either.

i pay £15 a month for this,providing i dont download films and music, which i dont anyway, i never go above my monthly allowance on here, nor do i have to pay a bt line rental. it allows me to surf, go on all me sites and play endless games (now its sorted itself out again lol )

gonna have to brave this weather in amo, got a certain someone curled up behind my back, sighing and doing some heavy breathing, just to make sure i know hes there :rolleyes::yh_rotfl

It was hammer drilling, drilling through breeze block bricks and concrete ! Gawd was it a huge noise!!! I think they finished yesterday afternoon, as I haven't heard anything today. Mind you, thinking about it, all the roads today have terrible black ice. Buses have stopped running on anything less than main roads, people are sliding about and falling over all over the place. Schools are closed. Vehicles are skidding even on the level, so they have no chance on our hills ! So maybe the workmen just haven't been able to get here, today ! Now it's snowing again ! It was terrible this morning, with folks trying to get to work, on foot and in cars. In our county alone there were over 80 road accidents ! If it continues snowing on top of this black ice, things will grind to a halt! Apparently, on the A46 (an exceedingly busy trunk road in the rural area of our county), there was a 9 mile queue of static traffic, this morning during the rush hour ! :driving:

It is most entertaining watching out of our bedroom window at vehicles sliding all over the place, just missing parked cars! So glad my hubby parked ours off the road a few days back ! I think I would cry if somebody hit it ! (that's my car in the avatar - a Volvo T5 sh1t off a shovel turbo !). I suppose there is a bright side to all this, that I've no doubt we shall have yet another 'cold weather payment' (average below freezing temp. for 7 days). :rolleyes:

It is most entertaining watching out of our bedroom window at vehicles sliding all over the place, just missing parked cars! So glad my hubby parked ours off the road a few days back ! I think I would cry if somebody hit it ! (that's my car in the avatar - a Volvo T5 sh1t off a shovel turbo !). I suppose there is a bright side to all this, that I've no doubt we shall have yet another 'cold weather payment' (average below freezing temp. for 7 days). :rolleyes:

Wow, Gill, you guys are getting hit hard. There is no job or place I would drive in this type of road conditions. It's not risking losing your life over. Let's hope those workmen are finished as I can only imagine the noise! Listening to that would drive me mad! Your car is awesome Gill :driving:

We are getting it hard, for this country LOL. Because it doesn't happen so often - that we get such a long, cold and snowy period, a lot of people can't handle it very well. Driving, of course, is another matter. Some people think that as they've got good modern tyres on their wheels, they will be able to drive as if the roads were dry! Wrong ! They soon find that out :wah: :rolleyes: The Department have told authorities that they must cut down their gritting by 25% ! This is to try to make the salt/grit last a few days longer. A lot of areas are rapidly running out, so there is absolutely no hope that our residential side roads will ever get gritted. :-5 So far our main hospital The Queens Medical Centre (also a teaching hospital) has treated 1500 patients with various injuries, including many broken bones, over the last week. One of the surgeons has said that he has worked 36 hours on Saturday and Sunday ! I should think that all the A & E staff will now know how to plaster up a broken limb ! Ambulances are having great difficulty because people have left cars abandoned, and not very carefully either, so various roads are impossible to get an ambulance through. Appeals have gone out over the local radio station, for people to get their cars off the road, to give a fighting chance for emergency services to get through. The Air Ambulance is being hard-worked as well, sometimes in cases where abandoned vehicles have blocked roads.

Well the snow is settling on the roads, there's a thin covering on top of the black ice. It's going to be 'great fun' for the home-coming workers this evening. Best of luck to them, but mind my car !!!!!!! :driving:

its been like a spring day here. wall to wall sunshine ( sorry gill

)

first time ive been out with the dog, minus one of me jumpers, woolly hat and me wellies for over a week !!!

mind you from bodmin moor upwards its been awful..........hundereds of people stuck for hours just outside exeter again but i think an accident caused that and once the traffic stopped, it couldnt get going again,

ive cleaned my windows and washed me nets and had the front door open and heater off for a bit !!

we had a lovely walk this afternoon, now wally is fed and watered, im showered and deciding wot to have for tea,

back to work tomorrow nite, no excuses left now ...........................:sneaky:

Helen. did you see my wonderful Kauto Star surpass Dessie's record Boxing Day? I was there and he was fabulous. I will be working the Cheltenham Gold Cup on 19th March when he goes for a third GC. Can't wait.

hi oscar, yes i did.................... wasnt he brilliant ?? shame about dessies record but it was bound to happen, dessie was a good old hoss in his day but records get broken and its kauto stars turn to shine !!

Glad you got to see the race. He won by 36 lengths. Last time a classic was won by that kind of distance was 'Arkle' in 1962 when he won by 30 lengths so Kauto really did excel on the day. No-one will ever forget Dessie though. :-4 I'm hoping to get sokme home film footage of Kauto at Cheltenham.
