Webcam on the computer, I just saw my son!

Post by Odie »

How cool is this?

My son who lives in Alberta bought a computer with a webcam!

We talked on 'hotmail live' tonight and it was just the greatest thing of all times to actually see him!

It's been years since I've seen him and now I can see him everyday, he showed me around his apartment and the magnificent collection he has on his wall of old record albums.

He looked so good, and we have missed each other so much!:-4

and its live, just like a movie.:guitarist

tomorrow night, we will connect earlier so I can see my grandson, Simon!:guitarist

as this was 3 am my time and 1 am his time!:yh_rotfl

Now I will go and check out how much it would cost me to buy a webcam to hook up to my computer so they can see me, nothing fancy just a cheapo!

What was even better is, I phoned him, so instead of typing everything, that was also much easier and so much more fun!

technology.... huh!

does anyone have a webcam hooked up to their computer where you see each other while you talk?

I have a webcam and microphone, and it can be used on MSN and Skype, it can be great fun. When you can see and hear somebody from Australia and you're in England, and it costs nothing - it is really amazing ! You can pick up webcams at quite reasonable prices, but be aware that you do get what you pay for, so if you want a really good pic, then it is worth spending a few extra pennies !

Ya it is brilliant.

My mom , who turn 80 this year got a lap top two years ago and took lessons on how to use it. She has a web cam and we link up regularly and she gets to see the kids and stuff. It defiantly closes the distance and makes it feel less far apart.

Technology is truly wonderful for these reasons. Installing a webcam is easy and can be used on Skype, AOl. Msn, Yahoo, Gmail all of them.

I'm confused as to how you saw him on your end without a webcam does hotmail have a special feature that allows that? There has to be someway of viewing on your end and that is usually with a webcam are you sure you don't already have a webcam. Do you have laptop? they are usually at the top of the screen a little square.

She would be able to see him, but he would not be able to see her, only hear her.

As he has the web cam his computer would be transmitting the image.

I talk to my parents in Canada almost every day from the UK. They get to see the grandkids and the kids get too see them. Much better than a phone and a lot cheaper as it's free. Much nicer when you can see who your speaking with as well........:-6:-6

Steve mentioned we could also talk to each other via microphone Gill.

Mine is hotmail live, would it still work on that one?

What would be a reasonable price?

so glad to hear you have one also, to cool eh?

OH thank you Carla, its good to know those sites will accept it as I have hotmail, it wouldn't take anything to download another, just easier using my own.

He invited me, it came onto my complete 'hotmail live screen', I clicked yes and he was there in a box, underneath it was a box showing a webcam marked with an X, that would be where I would be.

The only way I can view him is if I have one.

I'm not that in to technology nearly to the extent you are, so you would have to ask someone else how it works.

Imagine just how your parents feel seeing you and their grandkids from so far away, yet it seems like everyone is in the same room!:-4

If you haven't got a remote microphone or a built in microphone on your PC, make sure the webcam you buy does have a built in microphone. Else you won't be able to talk. But it does sound as if you have a mike in your PC anyway, if you were able to talk to your son.

thanks Gill as I didn't know it had to come with one.

my son and I were talking on the phone at the time, as it made it seem like we were in the same room, so we can always just do that.
