Although I go to college in the bay area, the garden that I work on is in San Diego. I am from San Diego and love gardening. I am no expert by any means, but it's one of my many hobbies. I am a 20 year old male. I don't know why I like working in the garden, but I do. My house in San Diego is less than 1/4 mile from the beach in the North County region, about 35-40 miles north of downtown. You can basically plant anything you want.
I come here on a sad note...my dog died and I was wondering what a good memorial tree would. Suggestions? I was thinking a jacaranda or a cherry tree. I like trees/vines that are deciduous...they give a sense of season that you don't really get in San Diego.
One of my other problems is that my garden has really grown into a jungle. Everything grows really well...almost too well. Spring & Summer have almost constant battles with magnolia vines and date palm seeds from our huge palm tree.
So what kind of tree do you suggest?
Thanks!

Jacarandas are amazing trees.
If you get a new dog you could take him to sit under the tree and tell him stories about how great the old dog was. The new dog may resent you but hes just a replacement anyway.

We have a new dog from the pound and he's great! He's super well behaved and well trained...it's almost shocking how good he is....and he's only two!
She will live on in our hearts.
The problem with our yard is that it's so crowded! It's like a tropical jungle! But we will always have room for Lucy!

HI and welcome!
I'm so sorry you dog died.
In remembrance, I suggest a variegated dogwood bush. (it even has dog in it:-6)
As your garden is fairly crowded this grows to around 5 feet high and it look stunning! It has red steams throughout the year and green and white leafs, I have one and as said, with the red stems, it looks really attractive. It also has little white flowers in late spring.
If it grows to tall or bushy, you can always cut it back.
It will need full sun.
add some red bark around it and wella!:guitarist
googling this bush does not show its justice, so see it at your garden centre.
click on it for larger view........the stems don't appear red here, but they are.

Welcome to the garden, sorry to hear about your dog. I like the jacaranda tree idea, such a beauty. Pity they don't grow well here in the tundra.
I hope you enjoy yourself here in the garden.
Cheers

Hello and welcome to FG! I am so sorry about the passing of your dog Lucy. I have a miniature weeping willow tree on my property. I placed my beloved parakeet (Pete) there and a small bench. It's a peaceful spot and sometimes I will sit there and imagine Pete amoungst the branches being free now from his cage. :-4
