That may well be true but it doesn't follow that there was one mimed performance and one sung live. We were watching the same event.

Wayne Douglas Gretzky, CC LLD (hc)[1] (born January 26, 1961 in Brantford, Ontario) is a retired Canadian-American[2] professional ice hockey player. He is formerly a part-owner of the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also been the club's head coach and head of hockey operations.

Born and raised in Brantford, Gretzky honed his skills at a backyard rink and regularly played minor hockey at a level far above his peers.[3] Despite his unimpressive stature, strength, and speed, Gretzky's intelligence and reading of the game were unrivaled. He was adept at dodging checks from opposing players, and he could consistently anticipate where the puck was going to be and execute the right move at the right time. Gretzky also became known for setting up behind the net, an area that was nicknamed "Gretzky's office" because of his skills there.[4]

In 1978, he signed with the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association (WHA), where he briefly played before being traded to the Edmonton Oilers. When the WHA folded, the Oilers joined the NHL, where he established many scoring records and led his team to four Stanley Cup championships. His trade to the Los Angeles Kings had an immediate impact on the team's performance, leading them to the 1993 Stanley Cup finals, and is credited with popularizing hockey in California.[5] Gretzky played briefly for the St. Louis Blues and finished his career with the New York Rangers. In his career, Gretzky captured nine Hart Trophies as the most valuable player, ten Art Ross Trophies for most points in a season, five Lady Byng Trophies for sportsmanship and performance, five Lester B. Pearson Awards, and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP.

After his retirement in 1999, he was immediately inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and is the most recent player to have the waiting period waived. He became Executive Director for the Canadian national men's hockey team during the 2002 Winter Olympics, in which the team won a gold medal. In 2000 he became part owner of the Phoenix Coyotes, and following the 2004–05 NHL lockout he became the team's head coach.

Nicknamed "The Great One", Gretzky was called "the greatest player of all time" in Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the NHL.[6] He is generally regarded as the best player in the history of the NHL,[7][8] and has been called "the greatest hockey player ever" by many sportswriters,[9] players,[10] and coaches. Upon his retirement on April 18, 1999, he held forty regular-season records, fifteen playoff records, and six All-Star records.[11] He is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season—a feat he accomplished four times. In addition, he tallied over 100 points in 15 WHA/NHL seasons, 14 of them consecutive. Gretzky's jersey number, 99, has been retired by all teams in the National Hockey League. He was voted one of six players to the International Ice Hockey Federation's (IIHF) Centennial All-Star Team in a poll conducted by a group of 56 experts from 16 countries.[12]

Odd chap to get to light the cauldron then. Mind you, we have some footballers who spend their playing careers abroad too. I think it's the money that attracts them. David Beckham springs to mind. We tend to like seeing them go, it means we can import a few more Argentinians and teach them English.

If I had my choice?

It would have been Mats Sundin, he's not Canadian but he was the best Captain the Toronto Maple Leafs ever had.

Shane Koyczan's poem and especially his delivery had me cheering.

Indeed. They took a risk on an unconventional format and I too thought it was great.

I'm not sure Leonard Cohen's song was the best choice for k.d. lang to sing which distresses me as both stand as high in my admiration as anyone gets.

I cannot allow you this opinion. Please take it back and burn it. The song was magnificent and the way she did it was astounding. I prayed it would never end. You sir are on a short leash.

Listen again...I have no problem with either the singer or the song, merely the aptness for the occasion. It's a song about the dichotomy of relationships, it didn't fit either the mood or the story being enacted throughout the presentation, it was an intrusive break. She sang it very impressively. The Joni Mitchell contribution, on the other hand, fitted perfectly.

He has been my hero and idol for years, I have tons of his memorabilia here in my office including a huge pic of his 500th goal!

I met him one day, waited 4 hours in the freezing rain to meet him and get his autograph, I had taken one of my 8x10 pics out of its frame for him to sign, he is so nice, down to earth and gorgeously stunning! I shook his hand, I guess everyone else was to nervous to! Told him he was the greatest ever, he blushed and thanked me.

My son and I have seen him twice at the ACC, the second time was last Feb. 15th when he was playing for the Vancouver Canucks! The one and only game they would play in Toronto!

Not only did he get tons of standing ovations from leaf fans, he also won the game in the shoot out!

It was awesome Tan, the crowds cheered all night long for him, he came out by himself on the ice to do his usual cute smile as crowds cheered him on.

I framed that ticket, sorry its upside down!

how I miss my Mats.:(

Vancouver saw one of the most dramatic day's sport but it was a while ago, not everyone here will remember it. It was in 1954 and saw the first raced mile to end with two sub-four-minute performances, from Roger Bannister and John Landy. They're both still around, Roger Bannister's retired from being Master of Pembroke College Oxford and John Landy's retired from being Governor of the State of Victoria in Australia. I doubt whether today's athletes are likely to have such prestigious afterlifes.

Anyway, there was Roger Bannister fresh from winning his sub-four-minute mile gold medal when the marathon finished: Jim Peters came into the arena a good quarter of an hour ahead of his nearest rival and collapsed, got up again, staggered toward the final lap and went down unconscious. Roger Bannister ended up giving him emergency treatment at the trackside, being a qualified doctor. Jim Peters survived but gave up competitive running.

Dramatic stuff, sport.

(Monday 15th febuary 2010.

Olympic games kills boys

Bad olympic influence kills three children in a paddock.)

Nah just kidding!!!! :wah: But I was worried there for a bit.

Let me explain . My two boys sat watching the luge trials yesterday . After sitting there for so long I told them to go outside and do something constructive.

They did!!!

A short time later I hear the drill, then the grinder, then some hammering . I'm sitting at the computer proud as punch thinking they are finally showing some enginuity, and getting those brains working. Their mate arrives in his Ute and joins in.

Then I hear the Ute going round the paddock. Oh, I think to myself, they got bored and are now just driving around.

NUP!!! :-3

Hmmmmmm..they were making their own 'type' of luge.

They have connected the "LUGE" to a rope and are paddock surfing at twenty kmsh on it. :-2:-2

You know those moments as a parent where you have to make a choice about crushing the wants and needs of your children ? Well I didn't............. I called out to them "You guys know the rules..........SAFETY FIRST" . And they immediately donned their motor bike helmets and gear.

What else could I do ? It was a mighty fine Luge thingy that they just spent two hours making. Two weeks before, that piece of wood was a raft. And nobody drowned.

So In the future if anything happens to them I shall blame the influence of television and the winter olympic games. :D

i thought I would throw in a little bit of trivia for you on the wild haird Measha Brueggergosman, the is the gorgeous woman who sang the Operetic Olympic Song. I dont know the name of the song but it was written for the Olympics in general.... Measha .... almost on her 32nd birthday she under went emergancy life saving surgery for an Aortic Disection. Her Aorta blew apart. She is a very lucky young lady to be alive. And quite an amazing singer. Kudos to her as well as everybody else during the olympics.

I was up until 2 am watching the Canadian woman’s ice hockey team beat Switzerland 10 – 1, Wow. They are a great team.

The snowboarding was exiting as well, Canada should have had the Gold on that one. I think the guy thought he had a bigger lead that what he did and play it safe. The American must have been flying to move from 3rd to take the lead like that. Another Gold for the Yanks, and a Silver for the Canadian.

I have to say I am with Nomad here. I would not have been too impressed to have to sit there all that time waiting and waiting. For the amount of preparation and money that has been put out, you would think they would have thought to have a backup for the state of the art (piece of trash) zambonie they ordered especially for these games.

Thanks to Calgary for helping out!

We are glad we could help. It is good we can pull together and get you guys out of a pinch. Yes a shame it happened :( seems there are a few blips along the way.

Expected ?? Odie I don't think they were expected. I think Vancouver went into the Olympics expecting perfection. Everybody does. Ok maybe that is just me but we are on a world stage why would we expect these blips.

I spent the day watching CURLING I love this game. Saw the US men beat Sweden in 11 ends 7 to 6, then the US women just beat Great Britian 6-5 in 11 ends...:-6:-6 We have 1 curling venue in San Diego I may have to check it out. :)

Its a great game. A ton of strategy is involved. I wish I would have did this whenI was younger - you can do this in local teams and they are called Bonspeils for tournaments. We are continuouslly (sp??)watching the mens and womens up here, because they are quite good. Good on you for mentioning this. Remember, it is never too late to start!
