good afternoon
having arrived back at grumpy towers from tescos with the family shopping in tow.

its time to switch on the computer and bash out another column
A WOMAN dubbed Mrs Fixit has been filmed secretly by The Sun as she offered to arrange sham weddings at up to £20,000 a time.
They would allow foreigners not normally entitled to stay in Britain to remain here - and become eligible for benefits
They also raise serious concerns about our security.
The woman - known as Lyuda - quoted a scale of charges to undercover Sun investigators and spoke about the documents required during recorded, face-to-face meetings.
We tracked her down during an operation launched in January following allegations about marriage fixing.
Lyuda told us the cost of providing a British spouse for a marriage of convenience was £20,000, while the bill for recruiting a non-UK, European Union partner was £8,000.

How would you have reacted in 1935 when Erica Mann and W. H. Auden performed a marriage of convenience in order to obtain British citizenship and residency rights for her? I can see parallels.

Are you suggesting that if someone gets citizenship and residency rights in another country by means of a marriage of convenience entered into for personal reasons it has a different moral basis than if it's done for money? We can go down that route if you want.

All I'm saying is that a 'third party' is making a mint out of other peoples' desperation, in the case quoted in the OP. That has got to be wrong on many levels!

Your missing the point here entirely Old Boy.
Regardless of weather It Is moral, Immoral, who Is profiting etc etc... The fact is, It Is happening here and has been ever since we have had Labours Open Door Policy.
This also sends the reports you have posted on other threads Into a deeper cocked hat. It proves that the enquirey that found the Labour Parties report that Immigration vs GDP Is fundamentally flawed, even more so. Any Government report that tries to fool the electorate that Immigration Is benificial to the UK, has not taken Into account, arriving relatives and offspring. This Is the part of Immigration that I do not believe you Understand. Once here, arranged marraiges to bring others Into the country who have absolutely no right to be here, Is only one of the many mounting problems of your Parties Open Door Policy.

Perhaps I might quote Mr. Simon Hughes (Southwark, North and Bermondsey; Liberal): in the House of Commons Asylum and Immigration debate on 2nd February 2000:The incompetence and failure to plan adequately began under the Tories and they failed. The number of people who were not picked up and should have been and who were told to leave but were not deported was no better under the Conservative Government than it is now, and the system was no more competent, as I know from personal experience. Therefore, it is a bit rich to say that the problem is the fault of this Government since 1997.

If you want to focus on the number of people in the UK who have no legal basis for being here, that's a different matter - the number should be zero and every government should make that their target as a matter of urgent priority. I dispute that any Labour administration is any worse at approaching that than any Conservative administration, past present or future, but it ought to be rigorously pursued as a target.

That bit I have a problem with - where can I find an adequate description of what you're referring to? Open Door Policy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia is the only meaning of "Open Door Policy" I've come across. Where does any UK party refer to an Open Door Policy? If it's a part of the EU common border legislation which allows all EU nationals the right to live and work anywhere within the EU then yes, that's Labour party policy, but it doesn't introduce illegal residents or illegal workers into the UK and it surely isn't affected by arranged marriages.

And you are not taking Into account the Immigrants who are here legally that send their off-spring out to Pakistan or India for an arranged marraige and then have the right for that family to come here also.
You also know as well as I do that even If any Immigrant Is caught In an arranged marraige, they have the right to appeal and appeal again through our courts costing the country thousands in legal fee's.

Arranged marraiges by Indian or Pakistani familes in the country of their origin of course Is not Illegal. The point I was making there was that the Fiancee In Pakistan as an example has no rights at all to live In Britain until they marry an Immigrant with British Citizenship. Once married, the Fiancee can then legally come to the UK and apply for his or her family to join them. If they are declined for any reason they can remain In the country while they appeal time and time again.
Arranged marraiges between any-one with British Citenship and a Foriegn National who they have never met, for a Monetary gain or to gain the person a passport, is Illegal.
Brides Paid to Enter into Illegal Marriages
As an example.

No, I don't actually think "however many". There's a balance between those who want to come to the UK and those who want to go somewhere else. I'm happy to see a balance between those two figures, achieved by the worldwide removal of all travel and work permit restrictions. I don't know how many people would end up living in the UK as a result but I do know that the final stable total would be less than "however many". As a guide, the population density of Bangladesh is five times higher than that of the UK so you could reasonably expect an increase. The overall comfort of humanity would go up.

I'm more than happy to declare my undying anathema upon all arranged marriages between anyone with British Citizenship and a Foreign National for monetary gain or to acquire a passport. Does that bring our positions closer? I'm not sure I moved in the process. My initial comment was that if you want to focus on the number of people in the UK who have no legal basis for being here, the number should be zero and every government should make that their target as a matter of urgent priority.

I actually tend toward your way of thinking.
I believe however the demand for residency in the UK with all it's benefits (not necessarily social security handouts) far outstrips the benefits the incomers can bring. The very benefits that the people come for are diminished, watered down, by the numbers arriving, similar to the way tourism can alter the area visited.

Swings and roundabouts. Speaking locally, St Pauls is the most culturally vibrant part of Bristol and while it's not the richest it's thriving.

But in some areas the culture is a total transplant from the majority newcomers countries, wiping out any local Brit culture or any other for that matter.
There are many ghetto like areas, no go for outsiders.
I live in a medium sized Kent town, ten years ago the only cultural mix was a few Anglo/West Indian families, now we run the whole gamut.
As I have said I lean toward your way of seeing things, but that doesn't stop the less tolerant amongst us being afraid, jealous, or purely anti foreigner based on the deluge that has transformed a small town into the united nations.

The same was said of the Poles back in the late forties and fifties, Bruv. It's commonplace among emergent communities. They invariably evolve.

When flower power came along I stood for Human Rights, marched around for peace and freedom, had some nooky every night - we took it serious.

In what exactly? Last time I had the mis-fortune to have to drive through St Pauls, all I saw was drop In centres for ethnic Minorities, pubs and run down estates.

They're quite good, some of the pubs. The Star and Garter is an experience not to be missed. The Duke of York is fun too, just behind Junction 1.
There's the Carnival, maybe you've missed that over the years. The City Farm and its Fair, the Climbing Centre, the Circus School, the local shops, several parks with a focus on wildlife, Herberts for bread, Licata for the deli counter, Teoh's and Bell's Diner and the One Stop Thali Cafe for the best thought out places to eat. What St Pauls is best at is the friendly local atmosphere, it feels safe and inviting. Stopping the car and joining in and getting to know people is the first step.

My only desire In St Pauls In my car Is to accelerate and get the hell out of there.
I have visited the City Farm. I have no desire to attend the carnival as I can get an up-date on crime commited during It from my Police E mail up-dates. As for bread and Deli's, I much prefer The Fishponds road especially the Turkish Deli where one can find fresh baked bread three times a day and a range of exotic fruits and veg. They also provide a full gambit of Pastrami, Parma etc etc. You need to broaden your horizens Spot.
