This sort of thing seems to be rife throughout this country! Yobs throwing heavy objects from bridges to hit vehicles travelling fast underneath. How can it be stopped? The yobs know that all they have to do is run off, and if they're stopped, to just deny all knowledge of any offence. They know that there is no evidence of identification to tie them to such an offence, so they are allowed to go, and they are laughing, literally!

I have a great deal of sympathy but the police cant charge those " most likely " to be the perpetrators, as much as we want to see justice done. "Most likely " just wouldnt stand up in court. There was always going to be an element of uncertainty with things like this

A doctor at the hospital where I worked was on his way to work one morning. Someone threw a huge rock off the overpass and the rock killed him instantly. He left behind a pregnant wife and two small children. The (blank) who did this was never caught. I hope the (blank) who was responsible has nightmares about this but I doubt it. Unless the police sit on every overpass (which is impossibe) this horrific crap will continue to happen. To this day when I approach an overpass I try to speed up and think about this doctor who lost his life because some (blank) thought this was a fun thing to do :-5

The yobs, of course, know this and so they carry on doing it, and it doesn't stop even if they kill somebody. That is the 'buzz' they get. They also put heavy objects on railway lines to try to derail a train! How many could that kill ffs.
It is time we brought back corporal punishment - enough pansying about! The only language they understand is violence and hurt. The do-gooders have failed, now bring back a punishment that these yobs will take notice of and try to avoid.
Gone, now, are the days of 'don't hit them, otherwise they'll think that is the way to go on', or 'If you hit a child as a punishment, they will grow up as violent people' --- what utter tripe! Many of these youngsters grow up to be 'jail-bait' anyway. The possibility is that corporal punishment may keep them on the straight and narrow. How many people have said 'A good smack on the bottom never hurt me!' It's cause and effect - you do that bad thing and you will get hurt for doing it. The cane for under 16's and the birch for over 16's !

That is terrible, Jazzy!
A similar thing happened from a pedestrian bridge over the main A52 dual carriageway from Nottingham to Derby. Yobs threw a rock from the bridge, at an ambulance that was carrying a patient to the Derby Royal Infirmary (If I remember rightly). The ambulance driver was hit in the face through the shattered windscreen, and the ambulance went out of control and crashed on it's side up an embankment. Nobody was killed, fortunately, but the driver lost the sight of one eye and had severe scarring on his face. He was so badly injured that he cannot work any more, and his mental capacity has been severely reduced. Four youths were arrested and taken to court. Two were jailed 3 years, and the younger two got 3 years in a youth detention centre. They would all be out and free after about 18 months, whereas that poor driver had a life sentence ! But at least, in this case, the villains were caught!
The road is the same road as the OP report only this part ran westwards from Nottingham to Derby. The OP part ran eastwards from Nottingham to Grantham in Lincolnshire.

Post a few snipers around a few bridges.
A few of these "yobs' lose a kneecap, I bet the number of such incidents would drop, quickly.

It always amazes me how people can be so thoughtless, cruel and irresponsible.
Along the same lines, and just as terrible, are the people who are involved in an auto accident who run away right after that accident instead of staying at the scene. My step son's Mustang was demolished not too long ago by folks who did just that after they rammed right into him. He is okay, but the people will not be caught because they fled the scene. Probably no license, no registration.

Probably it was a stolen car AFTR. There's a lot of that happening in the UK. Yobs steal a car, it's not theirs so they don't care. They hit something, or somebody and they leg it. If they can get away in the car, they take it somewhere quiet and having nicked another car, they will burn the one involved in the accident to destroy any evidence that could be traceable to them. As I have said earlier, corporal punishment needs to be brought back and soon. It's the only thing that will deter these idiots --- pain.

Hey, I learned something today!:D
Yobbo or yob is a slang term for an uncouth or thuggish working-class person. The word derives from a back slang reading of the word "boy" (boy or boyo reversed becomes yob or — slightly modified — yobbo).
[edit]Britain
In Britain, as the word 'yobb' came out of the London back slang and into more general English usage, it and latterly 'yobbo' have meant 'working class, adolescent, male person'. Within his own culture, he was not necessarily seen as uncouth, though a person writing about him rather than speaking of him was likely to be of another social class and prone to seeing him as loutish.
Dr. C.T. Onions, an editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, seems not to have noticed the word before he published the XYZ section of the dictionary in 1921 but the later supplement notes the use of 'yob' as meaning 'boy' in the working-class youth context, from 1859. This implies that the word had by that stage come out from the back slang argot into ordinary English usage. In the dictionary supplement's references, it is possible to detect a slow drift in the word's meaning, towards the 'Ruffian' interpretation, the new emphasis becoming clear from about 1927.
'Yobbo' appears from 1922 when its meaning does not clearly emphasize the ruffian. Its meaning drifts clearly towards the 'ruffian' interpretation by 1956, though a reference of 1938 calls a yobbo a 'Street Rough'.
In Britain today, this word is sometimes superseded by the newer term "Chav".

Well I reckon "Chav" is a Romani word and would refer specifically to white working class adolescent ( who often has a propensity for cheap bling and dresses in Burberry) I wouldnt say a chav is necessarily a yob. Just has appaling bad taste

Interesting - from a native's point of view, I'd say that the "working class" (whatever that is) part does not apply. A yobbo is anyone, probably youthful, given to antisocial behaviour+drink+vandalism+moderately violent behaviour.

Ok, enough silliness...
It's sounds as if Great Britain is REALLY having trouble with it's youth. As a teacher of troubled children, I'd like to know what all of you think is causing it.
Is it the breakdown of the family unit?
The proliferation of violent and negative media?
The lack of hope and jobs because of the economy?
What?

General lack of spine in high places. The fact that the punishment (if any) does not fit the crime. Making people stay on at school instead of working. "The benefit culture" allowing people who don't want to work an easy existence. The fact that this has all had time to work through the system and it's now ingrained in it. Europe. The weather. All that sort of thing.

I'm glad you addressed this issue Saint.
I wonder myself.
I think most people are aiming their anger at the youth rather than take any responsibility in supporting a system that causes this sort of antisocial, violent behaviour.
These kids come from families and a culture that makes selfish consumers of us all. They don't just start acting this way when they turn 11, 12, 14, or up!?
Throwing them in Jail isn't the solution.
That doesn't fix what's broken. Rest assured our society is BROKEN!
Our kids are just mere scapegoats and pawns.

Perhaps a rapid declination of income accompanied with high real estate costs and ironically enough women gaining more respect at the workplace?
Out of all of the cameras in England and "yobs" aren't caught in the act baffles me...
A collective sting operation once(3 days for rookie police officers) every 3 months for what I'd suggest 2 years would suffice to minimize the desire to murder people with rocks! The video surveillance captures the "yobs" in the designated troubled areas and the rookies on "stake out" blatantly I.D. the offenders' clothing along with eye witness testimony can this truly be a problem?

All of those just like it was in the fifties, the sixties, the seventies, the eighties the nineties and the noughties. We're bankrupt, our economy is in the **** involved in a war we should not have been our politicians have been caught with their hands in the till and think taking advantage of a situation is OK so long as it isn't against the rules and criminal charges won't be brought if you give the money back. It seems playing the system is OK so long as you are not at the bottom end of the social scale. But of course all the troubles we have are due to benefit scroungers, immigrants and single parents.
People who have simple answers sometimes don't understand the problems. Reading the daily mail would trophy anyone's brain if that is all they read.
On balance society is more tolerant now than it used to be, people are more connected than ever and care what is happening in other countries. You don;t see headlines like 100,000 young people attend music festival and behave themselves very well but someone gets stabbed in a drunken brawl and the end f the world is nigh. There are also fantasists who thrive on the delusion that the past was somehow more civilised and people didn't go around kicking the **** out of each other for no apparent reason and people didn't play the system.
What?

True. Our countries have been bankrupt since the 30's.
We pay interest on money that doesn't exist.
More "statutes" are passed ( NOT LAWS, 'cause the only law is common law) putting more restrictions on ALL our activities, to collect funds to pay down that interest to the bankers.
Bottom line we focus on the odd criminal and their acts, rather than the Powers That Be, how they are ruining our lives, destroying our environment, and taking everything that people work for.
What is your labour worth? Think about it.

As I live on higher ground:-
I can see 3 counties - Nottinghamshire (where I live), Leicestershire (where the castle is), and Lincolnshire.
I can see the Belvoir Castle standing proud in the sunshine, on the far hills.
I can see part of the River Trent as it meanders it's way from Nottingham to the coast.
I can see several main trunk roads with vehicles travelling busily to their various destinations.
I can see a fairly large retail park with constant to-ing and fro-ing of cars, vans and delivery lorries.
I can see the occasional train, as it runs along the lines from Nottingham to the East Coast, and also other trains that run along another line from Nottingham through Radcliffe-on-Trent and Bingham to Grantham in Lincolnshire.
But I can't see Beowulf ! :yh_rotfl
Below is a picture of a similar bridge to the one in the OP. 'Our' bridge used to carry railway lines from Cotgrave Colliery to the main lines. Since the colliery has now gone, the railway line has been made into a linear park (pedestrian walk way).
Wisey, yes I can see all sorts of things through my binoculars :yh_rotfl
I also have a telescope !
