Hey there weeder, nice to meet you. I was raised in GA; I hope you are enjoying my home state.

Karenina... Hello. Out of the ordinary circumstances brought me to Georgia.
I am homesick everyday, because my family are all in Virginia.
Its still hitting 75 or 80 here in the afternoons. At Christmas time,
that is very weird for me, being from the north.

I'm sorry that you are homesick. It's an awful feeling.
But it does pass - that's the good news.
You must be pretty far south if it's that hot in the afternoons. There are lots of gorgeous things to see down there. I was raised in Appling County; not sure how close you are to that. Great fishing.
When I first moved form GA to Chicago, I freaked out! LOL. I had never been so cold, had never seen snow...you are feeling the reverse of that now. I was feeling very homesick when I first moved. I missed the slow drawl, the smell of fresh grass and tobacco, crickets singing me to sleep at night, and the availability of fruit and nuts off of trees whenever I was hungry.
My mom took me around to see all the cool things in Chicago. It was an introduction to my new home, and the wonder of massive museums and buildings that blocked out sky helped give me new things to think about. Food, too - food was huge. LOL. LOTS of great food in Chicago.
When I moved from Chicago out to Portland a few years back, I used the same technique. I walked all of our bridges (the town crosses over a large river), I checked out several of the parks, I hiked the waterfalls...and I found the wonder of a new home. Portland, sadly, doesn't have great food. I still miss that. (dramatic sigh)
Perhaps if you drive around and find the beauty of your new home it will help ease the homesickness. VA is not too far to drive or hop the train to see family so hopefully you will ease the pain of separation through frequent visits.
Places I'd recommed : Jekyll Island, St Augustine, Okeefenokee Swamp, Savannah. Also, check out the local clubs (southern clubs - like the Elks, LOL) and people there will tell you about the best nature areas if you're into that.
And send me some boiled peanuts, will ya? Gawd!! How I miss boiled peanuts. Yum!!

Karenina..... Adjusting is not new to me. Eight years ago I left New York City and moved to rural Virginia. I lived on 112 acres in the woods, next to a little river.
Had my two sons with me then. It was quite a culture shock However I loved every minute of it. Last winter I came to St. Simons planning on only spending the winter. Bought a business here. I underestimated how much I would miss VA
and the boys. When you mention things to see... you hit the map right on the head. My shop is at the foot of the bridge that goes over to Jekyll Island. And the girls who work here keep wanting to take me to the okeefenokee swamp.
I want to go to Fernendina, St. Augustine, and Charleston SC. I am leaving here Chrismas Eve to go home to Virginia to visit. I will adjust. Thank you for the words of encouragement. I do love nature, and birds. In Virginia it was the thrill of seeing owls. Here its the Herons that thrill me. We have quite a few laughs about
me carrying on about the bugs and the lizards. Maybe as I get older it just takes a little bit longer...... Thanks again. Weeds
