Helen has bust her tibia and messed up her ankle!

Post by G#Gill »

Poor Helen is in hospital waiting for her swollen leg/ankle to reduce so that she can have an operation to set her tibia (broken in two places) and sort out her ankle!

She slipped on wet grass on sloping ground, on Thursday!!! When I rang her on Thursday, she had been given painkillers and had no severe pain, but her leg is badly swollen and she will have to stay in hospital till the swelling reduces and her leg can be operated on. She says she will have pins and plates. Her ankle has been pushed completely off its site!! Well what a way to get out of humping around 55 lb bags of potatoes ! (some people go to great lengths to get out of stuff !). Helen will be out of action for many weeks. I suppose one consolation is that they have internet facilities in hospital, so she can sometimes come on FG from her bed ! Apparently they use the TV that is over the bed! So watch what you say on here - she may well be watching :wah:

I'm sure that you all wish Helen a speedy recovery (well as speedy as mending broken bones can be!), and I know that she will be missed by us all.

Helen, you are in my thoughts Mrs! Take care, and try not to chat up the doctors too much! Here's hoping that the op goes well ! Keep us posted !

Gill can you pm me if you know which hospital she is in, thankyou :)

Those bedside tv's in hospital cost an absolute fortune, that's if you can get them to actually work in the first place!!

I'm sending my very good wishes too, Helen, for a speedy recovery!!

NOTE: There are learned articles in learned journals which suggest that all housework plus lawnmowing, taking out garbage etc - can be detrimental after the injuries you have sustained. It is recommended that instead, you should have cups of tea made for you, and be treated with ongoing tlc.

Hello Helen:-6

I'm so sorry that this has happened to you and hope you feel better soon.

Breaking an ankle is an awful pain:-1

I broke my ankle and had a trimalleolar fracture. I was in different casts for 11 weeks. Good thing I worked for a company who made casts for the lower leg:wah:

Wasn't 'Swellen' JR's wife In Dallas?

Good luck In surgery Helen. I sent of a parcel for you this morning and If the Champagne truffles are missing, then It wasn't me.... It was dem nurses :wah:

I'm reminded of the last time I was wheeled down to Theatre In Frenchay Hospital where some of the wards are old Billets from the War. As we came outside to cross the road, I asked the Porters to stop and let me have a cigg. What a sight that must have been to bemused visitors. Two Porters sitting on a Patients bed on the side of the road, Patient complete with Intravenus drips, all having a Cigg. :yh_rotfl

Gawd, Helen! Have they done the operation and sorted your leg and ankle then?

Sounds like a phone call to your darts captain ! Make sure the hospital are aware that you are living on your own. You can't say that a daughter will be able to pop in, because they have their own problems I dare say. You need a 24 hour carer, certainly for the first couple of weeks. You'll have to keep your leg up all the time, won't you, so how can you be expected to cook meals? Oh dear. Sorry Helen, sounds like I'm saying stuff you've already thought about! I do hope it works out OK for you. But if you have no help at home - and occasional visiting district nurses don't count, the hospital must keep you in surely! Or send you to a convalescent home, or whatever they are called.

That's about right, they tried to send mum home after major heart surgery with no after care in place! We shouted and screamed and got her transferred to a local smaller hospital so she could build up her strength and regain her confidence again. You really are going to have to shout and yell and point out that you live alone and need notice of when you'll be discharged so friends and family can get things organised.

Take it easy and good luck with the crutches, hope it's not too painful for you! :-4

Hey, Helen, BB is quite right! Now is the time to flex your vocal muscles, tell em this 'patient care' is a joke ! Tell em to put themselves in your position. Do some shouting, like BB says. Make a bloody nuisance of yourself, don't let them do that to you. Refuse to damn well go! Sounds a good idea though, sending you to a smaller 'cottage' type hospital. That will give you a chance to get used to your situation, get your confidence back. Just do a bit of shouting Mrs.

I'm so sorry that you're going through all of this pain. You have a lot of good advice here. You have to have after care to help you survive on your own.

Hi Helen:-6

What would be helpful would be to highlight every once-in-a-while and copy. This way you can paste if you delete it by mistake;)

Feel better Helen and take care. I'm so sorry that you're going through this. I wrote somewhere to you that I broke my ankle and was in casts for 11 weeks. It's difficult to say the least.

If just getting into the house from the car has knocked you for six I have to ask, who's looking after you?

You obviously aren't in any fit state to look after yourself yet.

Take good care of yourself and get sorted - push too hard too soon and you'll suffer later so get help when you need it.

where was your Daughter today?

You need to phone your doctor as he can have a nurse come out and care for you.
Life is just to short for drama.
