National Geographic Haiti

Post by Lon »

I enjoy National Geographic and have been reading through some really old copies that my SIL has in his library, some going back 50 years. Haiti is featured in a number of these editions spaced out over many years. It interests me because my father was born to missionary parents in Haiti and lived there as a youth. My dad mentioned to me about the corruption and poverty that existed when he lived there and then in reading several of the Geographics, corruption and poverty again is mentioned.

So over a period of 100 years or more nothing seems to have changed in Haiti despite all the $$$$$$$$$$ that has been dumped on the island and the best efforts of various missionary groups. What's the answer with a country like Haiti?

Obviously, all the money in the world can't buy dignity and self-reliance and peace of mind if the powers-that-be do not allow it for the population. I did notice during the earthquake tragedy, we did not see the leaders out there helping and comforting the people on a constant basis. Not in Haiti.

I wonder what the expectations of the people are for the future. Or do they just live for the day. Survive the best they can.

You are correct in saying that alot of money has been sent to Haiti. But was that money for just a "band-aid" on a large and nasty wound?

simple, but not so simple. Education and birth control.

Maybe some jobs, too.

But then without a stable, and accountable government, not much of the rest is possible.

Need to start with accountability for all the money pouring in.
