BBC News - Icelandic volcanic ash alert grounds UK flights
Thankfully I travelled back from Seville on Monday and not Friday as I'd originally planned! :-6
I bet it's been bliss for the folk who live in the region of the airports.
Volcanic ash halts all air travel in the UK!

That was fortunate, Abbey :-6

Now I wonder what made you do that ?! Very fortunate indeed, as it turns out, I agree with Theia! You could well have been stranded at the airport for who knows how long!
By the way, sorry I appear to have put up a similar thread! Last time I looked, there was no thread at all about the volcano, and whilst I was typing, I had to break off to deal with something so it took longer to put it on the board!

Very glad you're home safe, Abbey. I just posted in the other thread that I'd seen most of the airports in the north of France are also now closed.
I've a friend going to Iceland shortly. Maybe she should postpone that!

Until the weather pattern changes Pam, there's nothing going in or out of Iceland by air, or the UK for that matter. I've seen one helicopter fly over today, and that was one of those little Robinson things with a piston engine. Nothing with a turbo prop, jet, or shaft. In other words, anything with a jet engine is grounded.

Thanks, Dubs.
I had coffee with my friend yesterday morning. She will, I guess, now be rethinking her plans - which included cruising up the fjords of Norway, trains and boats and driving round Iceland. I've never been to Iceland, have you?
I have always been intrigued by the country. One of the geneticists at the medical research school I used to work at had done many studies using Icelanders - as they were less racially intermarried than most other nationalities, apparently. We also had an Icelandic couple who were Visiting Fellows. They were just so different. Very tall, very thin, whiter than anyone I'd ever seen before - almost like an etiolated plant - and so blond haired and so blue eyed. They had two children who were also similarly unusual, well unusual in Australia. After four years of Aussie sun and beach, they all looked more "normal".
Thanks, Dubs.

I haven't been there Pam, I'd love to though. My son's been a good few times, he's amazed by the place.

I've seen photos of people in thermal pools in an ice field, and those amazing black volcanic rocks.. now all with frightening overtones.
